The first comprehensive study of the Constance reforms since 1867, this volume offers new explanations for the frequently alleged failures of the reforms, while arguing that the successes were much greater than historians have generally acknowledged. The author analyses the specific reforms in light of the conflicting interests of reformers; then he probes the conceptual basis of the reforms employing methodology developed by Gerhart Ladner. An appendix offers a new edition of the central source for the deliberations — the records of the Constance reform committee — using three newly identified manuscripts. The Constance reformers gathered a rich harvest of late medieval institutional reform thought and imagery. Under the central motto of "reform in head and members," they put long-standing conciliar theories into practice, forging a pragmatic synthesis of hierarchy and collegiality.

This volume of essays by Heinz Schilling represents his three main fields of interest in early modern European history. The first section of the book, entitled 'Urban Society and Reformation', deals with urban society in northern Germany and the Netherlands from the fifteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. The author discusses social structure and changes, the problems of religion and mentality as well as political culture and thinking. The second section, 'confessionalization and Second Reformation', treats the paradigm 'Confessionalization', which denotes a fundamental process of social change within Old European society during the second half of the sixteenth and at the beginning of the seventeenth centuries. The third section, 'The Netherlands — the Pioneer Society of Early Modern Europe', deals with the Northern Netherlands as a model for early modern modernization and as a successful republican and 'bourgeois' alternative to the aristocratic Old European society. The essays collected in this book were originally written in German and published over the last fifteen years. The articles have been revised and the notes have been updated. This volume gives a broader English-speaking audience the possibility to read Heinz Schilling's research. The century between c. 650 and 750 was one of major religious, social and political transformations in northwest Europe. In the Frankish kingdom, clerics from Ireland and Britain played an important role in these processes. One of the most prominent figures to emerge from this period was Willibrord – a Northumbrian educated in Ireland who became the first bishop of Utrecht and founded the monastery of Echternach in modern Luxembourg. Through his involvement in the Christianisation of Frisia, his cooperation with the eastern Frankish elite, including the ancestors of Charlemagne, and his connection with the pope, Willibrord was at the centre of the developments which led to the formation of a new ecclesiastical and political landscape between the North Sea and Thuringia on the eve of the Carolingian period. This book, which represents the first extensive study of the topic in English, extends its analysis of Willibrord’s career beyond the mission to Frisia and examines the political dimension of his activity in Merovingian Francia and its border regions. By offering a fresh look at the main sources for Willibrord’s life, the book explores how Insular clerics shaped their Frankish environment through the creation of networks between Ireland, Britain and the continent and their ability to take on a variety of different roles within Merovingian society.

Mit beginnendem Westfeldzug wurde Franziskus Graf Wolff Metternich (1893-1978), Provinzialkonservator der Rheinprovinz, im Mai 1940 nach Vorbild der Organisation im Ersten Weltkrieg zum Beauftragten für Kunstschutz in Frankreich und den besetzten Gebieten beim Oberkommando des Heeres ernannt. Seit kurzem ist der private Nachlass Wolff Metternichs der Forschung zugänglich, darin befindet sich neben privaten Dokumenten eine unvergleichbare institutionelle Überlieferung zum Kunstschutz, insbesondere zu den praktischen Aufgaben der Kriegsdenkmalpflege. Das archivische Sachinventar gleicht diesen Kernbestand mit der Gegenüberlieferung in deutschen und internationalen Archiven ab und rekonstruiert anhand der vorhandenen Quellen und offensichtlichen Fehlstellen einen fiktiven Gesamtbestand. Begleitend zur daraus entstandenen Recherche-Datenbank (https://kunstschutz-wolff-metternich.de) bietet dieses Buch eine thematische Kontextualisierung der Quellen, einen Überblick der relevanten Archive und Bestände sowie weiterführende Forschungsansätze und Materialien.
