Excerpt from Annalen des Vereins f r Nassauische Altertumskunde und Geschichtsforschung, Vol. 33: 1902 und 1903 Mitteln des Museums in Wiesbaden und mit finanzieller Unterst tzung des Herrn Rentners Pfennings in Oberlahnstein. Leider konnte sie nur in ge ringem Umfangs stattfinden, weil immer nur beschr nkte Pl tze zur Verfugung standen, da in dem Terrain, wo spater Geleise gelegt werden sollten, nicht gegraben werden durfte; erschwerend war auch die grosse Tiefe der vorr mischen Schicht. So mussten wir uns damit begn gen, an verschiedenen Stellen Gruben anzulegen, um vielleicht ber die Ausdehnung des Dorfes nach Norden hin Aufschluss zu erhalten. Die Grabung zeigte berall das gleiche Bild. In der Tiefe von - 2 m beginnt die alte Kulturschicht, die bis zu lm stark ist und sich von dem dar ber gelagerten Boden durch ihre dunkle F rbung unter scheidet. Sie ist mit vereinzelten vorr mischen Scherben durchsetzt und findet ihren Abschluss in einer ber dem gewachsenen Sandboden aufgetragenen fest gestampften Lehmschicht, dem Boden der ehemaligen H tten. Der vollstandig bedeckt ist mit Scherben, Holzkohlen, Steinen, Bruchst cken von lava-mahlsteinen und hart gebrannten St cken von Lehmw nden. Der am weitesten s dlich vorgenommene Einschnitt konnte etwas breiter angelegt werden. Die schwarze Schicht begann schon bei 1,50'm Tiefe, bei 2 m erschien der Huttenboden auf der Westseite des Einschnittes, wahrend nach Osten an diesen sich eine Grube anschloss. Sie war herzf rmig, 3 m lang, in der Mitte an den beiden Enden m breit; die tiefste Stelle lag m unter Terrain. In ihr fanden sich schwere Schiefer und Wacken, Tiergebisse, viele Scherben, H ttenlehm, ein St ck eines Mahlsteines von lang gestreckter Form, eine halbe Thonpyramide mit Loch etc. In einem anderen Einschnitte zeigte sich die dunkle Schicht erst in einer Tiefe von m unter Terrain, bei m erschien der H tten boden mit vielen Scherben. Dieser wurde durchbrochen, und unter demselben trat eine zweite schwarze Schicht hervor, die ber einem Lehmboden lagerte, der m tief unter Terrain lag. Es war hier also nach Aufgabe der ersten Wohnst tte ber derselben der Boden gleich gemacht und eine neue gebaut worden. Dasselbe war der Fall in dem n rdlichsten Einschnitt, wo bereits bei m Tiefe der glatte Lehmboden der H tte sich zeigte. Unter dieser 20 cm starken Bodendecke lag eine Schicht von Kulturresten aller Art, insbesondere auch Huttenlehm und viele Scherben. Der n rdlichste und sudlichste Einschnitt waren 200m voneinander entfernt. Die Erwartung, nach Norden hin einen Abschluss des besiedelten Terrains zu finden, hat sich nicht erf llt; es ist ge wiss, dass auf Lahnstein zu noch eine Reihe Bauten gestanden haben muss. Dagegen l sst sich aus den Grabungen mit Sicherheit erkennen, dass auf dem untersuchten Gebiet sich Hatte an H tte reihte, denn in keinem Einschnitte fehlten die St cke der verbrannten W nde.
