Considering the peculiar character of the work, I could not but await the public verdict upon it with some degree of anxiety, and now that it has been rendered in part, I am not disposed to dissemble the high gratification I have received from it. That my own par tial friends should have looked kindly on the effort, perhaps I had a right to expect; but that the tone Of the press should have been so uniformly indulgent, - ignoring even imperfections of which I was myself painfully sensible, after having done the best that I could, - was certainly more than I could reasonably look for. I hardly need say that I have already realized the good effect of this kindly reception, in the increased vigour and alacrity with which I have been able to carry forward the work. I am indebted to several friends, especially to the Rev. J. L. Sibley, the present Librarian of Harvard College, for directing my attention to a few small errors, chie y in respect to dates, nearly all of which have been already corrected in the stereotype plates. Excerpt from Annals of the American Pulpit, or Commemorative Notices of Distinguished American Clergymen of Various Denominations, Vol. 6: From the Early Settlement of the Country to the Close of the Year Eighteen Hundred and Fifty-Five; With Historical Introductions The history of the Baptist denomination in the United States, like that of the other denominations, is so fully developed in the lives of its promi nent ministers, that it is impossible to construct even the most general out line of the former without drawing upon material that must necessarily be embodied in the latter. The present brief sketch is framed with a view to prevent, as far as possible, repetition in the body of the work. When the first Baptists came to this country, or who they were, it is impossible now to ascertain though Cotton Mather says many of the first settlers in Massachusetts were Baptists and he adds that they were as holy, and watchful, and fruitful, and heavenly a people as perhaps any in the world. It may not be uninteresting to note the rise and progress of the denomination, as indicated by its introduction into the several Colonies and States, or rather by the date of the origin of the first Baptist Church in each Colony or State, in chronological order.
