Excerpt from Annual Report of the Bureau of Vital Statistics of the North Carolina State Board of Health, 1931 The Bureau of Vital Statistics was created by: an Act of the General Assembly of 1913 which made the State Board of Health the custodian of all records of births and deaths, and the Secretary of the State Board of Health, by virtue of his office, State Registrar of Vital Statistics. The law went into force on July 1, 1913, but the collection of birth and death records did not start until the following October. The first annual report published by the Bureau of Vital Statistics related to 1914. Reports have been published for every year since, with the exceptions of 1918 and 1919, although the 1920 and 1921 reports consisted of only a few tables in the Health Bulletin. Of these, 29,111 were employed in commerce in all its branches, 42,015 followed industrial pursuits, and 61,233 were engaged in agriculture or other primary production. In 1895 there were 1,721 deaths recorded of males engaged in occupations included in one or the other of the three groups under consideration--viz., 352 commercial, 54Z_industrial, and 822 primary producers, so that calculations based on the figures above stated give the following results: ---Centesimnl Proportion of Males Centeslmal Proportion of Male Centesimal Ratio of foregoing in each Class to total Males Deaths in each Class to total Death Percentage, 1895, to in all three Classes in Census Male Deaths in all three foregoing Population perPopulstlon of 1891. The industrial class comes next, and, as was the case in previous years, primary producers contributed the largest relative proportion to the mortality rate in 1895. With respect to females, the information, as furnished on the death certificates, is evidently so unreliable that little is to be derived from an investigation of the figures. For instance, itis absurd to suppose that out of all those ordinarily engaged in commercial pursuits only 2 died during 1895; still such is the case, if dependence is to be...
