Over the last decade, journalism has undergone radical changes: new languages, actors and methods have risen especially due to the digital transformation, revolutionizing this field in unpredictable ways. Offering a transdisciplinary journey across Thomas Pynchon’s California trilogy, “From Faraway California” addresses the representation of (city)space in the Crying of Lot 49, Vineland, and Inherent Vice through “geourban” lenses. Drawing on specific concepts in urban and regional studies, the book provides a thorough examination of Pynchon’s spatial imaginary, where the reader comes to understand how his fiction tackles the socio-political and cultural consequences of urban restructuring in the contemporary city and the lives of its citizens. Pynchon’s depiction of California is further analyzed from mythical and environmental standpoints to shed light on his planetary vision and (post)postmodernist poetics in the span of nearly half a century. More broadly, the book’s geocritical and urban analyses of Pynchon’s fiction indicate what might take place concerning the future of urbanism, toward “planetary urbanization” and the formation of the “city region.”

The book starts with an analysis of what is new in the Digital Services Act. The aim is to see whether this new Regulation is appropriate both for not halting technological innovation and for addressing the risks that technological innovation poses to society and to the people who use digital services. The focal point is the risk of discrimination as people are often helpless in the face of the potential discriminations in the digital services sector. In particular, the book analyses how the Digital Services Act can make a concrete contribution to the protection against discrimination. To this end, it focuses on the responsibility of digital service providers and the fact that discrimination may also depend on the way in which algorithms and artificial intelligence systems are used. Therefore, a comparison is made between the Digital Services Act and the proposed Artificial Intelligence Act. The comparison discloses that the risk-based approach is the common thread followed by the EU in regulating the digital market. The book elaborates also on the practical implications of the risk-based approach. Highlighting advantages and limitations leading the author to conclude that the risk-based approach is the way forward only if the differences between risk and danger, the limits of law, and the limits of the tendency to humanise artificial intelligence systems are considered. With specific reference to the risk of discrimination, the need for a systemic and multi-level approach is highlighted, which reinforces the contribution that can be made not only by the Digital Services Act, but also by more general and cross-cutting legislation as those on data protection and unfair commercial practices.

I sistemi del cibo interessano le economie nazionali e locali, generano impatti su ambiente e risorse naturali, si relazionano con aspetti culturali e influiscono sulla salute delle persone e sul benessere animale. La governance del cibo è un campo multiscalare dove attori istituzionali, imprese, attivisti ed esperti intervengono, ciascuno con le proprie risorse, nella conduzione di politiche e progetti. Tali iniziative si inseriscono nel policy-frame della sostenibilità, formalmente condiviso dagli attori e apparentemente a-conflittuale, che delimita il campo delle politiche (desiderabili) e fornisce obiettivi e principi per l’azione. Nel volume è analizzato il tema emergente delle politiche urbane del cibo, un fenomeno di azione collettiva e pubblica, osservando i percorsi di sette sperimentazioni italiane da una prospettiva sociologica che interpreta i rapporti tra politica e società nella risoluzione di questioni di interesse collettivo. La ricerca fornisce risposte circa: l’ingresso e la permanenza nelle agende pubbliche e politiche del tema; i rapporti tra istituzioni e attori non-istituzionali; l’interdipendenza tra risorse politiche, cognitive e finanziarie; i processi di trasferimento di idee, concetti e soluzioni di policy. Nelle conclusioni è proposta un’interpretazione circa il metaframe delle politiche urbane del cibo, loro perimetro valoriale e normativo, e le tensioni tra i suoi elementi e le crisi che hanno riguardato i sistemi del cibo.
