Kaja-kelod dalam kebudayaan Bali berbeda dengan arah utara dan selatan yang tertera di dalam kompas. Konsep gunung dan laut adalah dua hal yang melatar belakangi kaja-kelod dalam kebudayaan Bali. Kaja adalah menuju ke gunung dan kelod adalah ke laut. Maka ada perbedaan antara kaja dan kelod pada masyarakat Bali Utara dan masyarakat Bali Selatan. Kaja-kelod dalam pandangan kebudayaan Bali mengandung filsafat (tattwa) yang mengarah pada gunung sebagai purusha atau unsur kejiwaan dan laut sebagai pradhana atau unsur kebendaan. Bertemunya gunung dan laut pada dasarnya akan menopang kehidupan manusia. Analisa diletakan pada sebuah konsep bahwa gunung sebagai luan (kepala) dan laut adalah tebén yang diibaratkan sebagai kaki. Maka kaja dan kelod sebenarnya mengandung tattwa, susila, upacara yang mengajarkan manusia untuk saling menghormati, menjaga alam, dan saling memelihara dalam kekuatan Tuhan itu sendiri.
