Excerpt from Anthology Of French Prose And Poetry The use of anthologies as an introduction to the general study of literature, and also as a preparation for an appreciative reading of complete texts, is rapidly growing in favor. They have for a long time been used on the continent, and were recently recommended by an international congress which met at Paris. They introduce the student to works with which he may, later on, be inclined to cultivate a more intimate acquaint ance. By enabling the student to pass, in a brief interval, from the tragedy of Corneille, for example, to that of Racine, from Moli're's comedy to the comedy of Marivaux and Beaumarchais, from the prose of Rousseau to that of Bernardin de Saint - Pierre and Chateaubriand, they give him, if not a complete, at least a first-hand idea of the succession of schools of writers and of the development of the methods of composition in poetry and prose. They also encourage him to appreciate the beauty and perfection of individual pages and even paragraphs, independent of the development of the plot. And the experience in our own classes has convinced us that, for American students, to whom it is desired to give, at the same time, proficiency in reading different styles of varied degrees of difficulty and some real acquaintance with the foreign authors themselves, with their style and their thought, the use of anthologies is of the greatest importance. Excerpt from The French Romanticists: An Anthology Of Verse And Prose Hugo's wonderful description of Paris as seen from the towers of notre-dame. Examples of the prose of Vigny and Musset, and a more adequate presentation of sainte-beuve and Gautier will be found in the companion volume. The selection from Chateaubriand, consisting of a number of short passages, has been made with 3. View to illustrate the new style which he initiated, and which has profoundly influenced the whole later development of French prose. There is nothing from Atala or Rene, for the reason that they both should be read in entirety by every student of the Romantic Movement, or, indeed, of French literature in general. We have been very sparing with notes, except in the case of pieces like Hugo's Grenade and the passage from notre-dame, which are full of topographical references. Excerpt from Specimens Of French Literature From Villon To Hugo: Selected And Edited T un origin of this book has been described in the Preface of the Short History of French Literature (c larendon Press), to which it is intended to form a companion. I need not here weary the reader by indicating at length the various objects I have had before me in the compilation. Among these, complete illustration of the beauties of any particular author has, it is needless to say, found no place, much less collection of my own favourite pieces. It has occasionally been necessary, for the sake of completing the panorama, to draw on what some people may not think the best work of individual writers. To make the whole a sufficient tableau of the various achievements of French literature from the literary point of view has been the main thing considered. Must emphasise the words from the literary point of view, ' because from any other the allotment of 3pace may seem oepricious. It has also to be remembered that some kinds of literature, such as prose fiction and drama, especially the latter, lend themselves with difliculty to the purpose. For instance, Racine is undoubtedly a greater name in French literature than Alfred de Musset. But Racine wrote in astyle which has few variations, and which is peculiarly difficult to exhibit in those variations except at great length. For the present purpose therefore a single extract suflices Again, Musset is, according to some, a greater name than Gautier, according to none, perhaps, a less. But Gautier was master of a variety of forms which are very different from each other and can be well illustrated, all being im portant as instances of the powers of the language: while Musset was more confined in range, and even within that range (as in his incomparable Proverbes) cannot be always shewn by sample at all. These are some of the conside rations which impose on the compiler of such a book as this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Sonnets And Love Poems Classic Reprint written by Anna Comtesse de Brémont and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-29 with Poetry categories.

American author Countess Anna de Bremont published Sonnets and Love Poems in 1892. She dedicated this anthology to her deceased husband, Count Leon de Bremont, from whom she got her title. It appears that her distinguished French spouse died early in her adult life, leaving her to wax romantic about his memory and use sonnets as her vehicle in unloading her grief and loneliness at his passing. But rather than think that this volume is nothing but a collection of mournful sonnets by a sentimental widow, consider the other poetic treasures that lay printed on the other pages of this book. The other short literary pieces are wistfully romantic, decidedly passionate, and are infused with a youthful, womanly charm - as if the author has never known grief. Countess de Bremont, who counted Oscar Wilde as one of her friends, does not only write of romantic fantasies and musings. She also dedicates a few verses to Christmas, her mother, some of her friends, and to characters and people she have met or observed. This work is apt for those who have a real appreciation and love for prose and poetry, especially those dating around the turn of the 20th century. This also makes a good gift option for the literary inclined and for female loved ones who are partial to romantic sighings written in verse. The last decades have seen an explosion of the prose poem. More and more writers are turning to this peculiarly rich and flexible form; it defines Claudia Rankine's Citizen, one of the most talked-about books of recent years, and many others, such as Sarah Howe's Loop of Jade and Vahni Capildeo's Measures of Expatriation, make extensive use of it. Yet this fertile mode which in its time has drawn the likes of Charles Baudelaire, Oscar Wilde, T. S. Eliot, Gertrude Stein and Seamus Heaney remains, for many contemporary readers, something of a mystery. The history of the prose poem is a long and fascinating one. Here, Jeremy Noel-Tod reconstructs it for us by selecting the essential pieces of writing - by turns luminous, brooding, lamentatory and comic - which have defined and developed the form at each stage, from its beginnings in 19th-century France, through the 20th-century traditions of Britain and America and beyond the English language, to the great wealth of material written internationally since 2000. Comprehensively told, it yields one of the most original and genre-changing anthologies to be published for some years, and offers readers the chance to discover a diverse range of new poets and new kinds of poem, while also meeting famous names in an unfamiliar guise.

Rediscovering The Islamic Classics written by Ahmed El Shamsy and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-11-29 with Social Science categories.

The story of how Arab editors of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries revolutionized Islamic literature Islamic book culture dates back to late antiquity, when Muslim scholars began to write down their doctrines on parchment, papyrus, and paper and then to compose increasingly elaborate analyses of, and commentaries on, these ideas. Movable type was adopted in the Middle East only in the early nineteenth century, and it wasn't until the second half of the century that the first works of classical Islamic religious scholarship were printed there. But from that moment on, Ahmed El Shamsy reveals, the technology of print transformed Islamic scholarship and Arabic literature. In the first wide-ranging account of the effects of print and the publishing industry on Islamic scholarship, El Shamsy tells the fascinating story of how a small group of editors and intellectuals brought forgotten works of Islamic literature into print and defined what became the classical canon of Islamic thought. Through the lens of the literary culture of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Arab cities—especially Cairo, a hot spot of the nascent publishing business—he explores the contributions of these individuals, who included some of the most important thinkers of the time. Through their efforts to find and publish classical literature, El Shamsy shows, many nearly lost works were recovered, disseminated, and harnessed for agendas of linguistic, ethical, and religious reform. Bringing to light the agents and events of the Islamic print revolution, Rediscovering the Islamic Classics is an absorbing examination of the central role printing and its advocates played in the intellectual history of the modern Arab world.

It includes generous selections from all the established giants - among them Baudelaire, Verlaine, Rimbaud and Breton - as well as works from a wide variety of less well-known poets such as Claudel and Cendrars, whose innovations proved vital to the progress of poetry in France. Eloquent and inspirational, this rich and exhilarating anthology reveals an era of exceptional vitality.
