Der Band untersucht Figuren der Wende sowohl in ihren kulturellen Ausprägungen und historischen Entwicklungen als auch in ihren poetologischen Konfigurationen. Ausgehend von der Kehre als epistemischer Figur über Modellierungen religiöser Konversion bis hin zu literarischen Modellen der Umkehr erstreckt sich ihre Wirkungsgeschichte in ganz verschiedenen Feldern. Die Wende erweist sich dabei als eine elementare Form der Orientierung. Der Begriff der Wende impliziert eine ihm inhärente Bipolarität, insofern eine Grenze zugleich auch als Ausgang figuriert. Narratologisch markiert die Kehre in einem Handlungsgefüge insofern eine Grenze, als sie das Ende einer narrativen Sequenz an einen neuen Anfang bindet, der mit der Figur einer Rückorientierung verbunden ist. Die literarische Inszenierung des kulturellen Narrativs der conversio kann das Narrativ selbst in den Mittelpunkt rücken, etwa den Moment der Nichtentschiedenheit (Krisis), der wohl als konstitutiv für den Wendeprozess anzusetzen ist, aber nicht zwingend zur Darstellung kommen muss. Als ebenso wichtig erweisen sich die verschiedenen Diskursrahmen, in die Figuren der Wende eingespannt werden können.
