Dans ce qu'on appelle au Brésil la guerre des carnavals, celui de Bahia concurrence désormais le carnaval de Rio en popularité et participation. L'histoire de ce succès a commencé avec son africanisation, née au milieu des années soixante-dix dans les quartiers noirs et déshérités de la ville. Cette Anthropologie du carnaval en fait la chronique en privilégiant trois thèmes : la ville - deux millions d'habitants, Rome noire et ville métisse, exotique, inégalitaire et parfois raciste -, la fête - situation liminaire dans laquelle des exercices rituels peuvent être imaginés sans entrave - et l'Afrique - vaste creuset, culturellement métis, d'une nouvelle identité noire brésilienne. Les fêtes sont l'expression et la manifestation des idéologies dominantes dans la mesure où elles sont souvent organisées officiellement, prises en charge par le pouvoir ou par les groupes constitués. Ainsi, le carnaval de Cayenne exprime les idéologies des Créoles. Sur l'axe de l'identité, on peut placer toutes les fêtes catholiques du calendrier. Elles sont suivies par les Créoles et font l'objet de rassemblement à l'église et en famille. Mais le carnaval reste le moment privilégié de l'affirmation identitaire. En provenance d'Europe, ce carnaval a conservé sa durée originelle qui correspond au calendrier romain, dans lequel cette période marque la fin de l'année. Les défilés carnavalesques ont donc lieu tous les dimanches, de l'Épiphanie au Mercredi des Cendres. C'est un exemple de manifestation culturelle publique où les caractéristiques de l'identité créole se retrouvent exposées dans les rues de Cayenne

Se fondant sur une ethnographie minutieuse, cette thèse propose une anthropologie du carnaval de Nice à partir des dynamiques, politiques, professionnelles et esthétiques. Les données recueillies permettent de comprendre la fabrique politique et institutionnelle de la fête aux regards des mécanismes touristiques qui la conditionnent. Les techniques de marketing festif, les stratégies évènementielles confèrent à ce carnaval une dimension touristique et consumériste. Cela dit, l'analyse ne peut être appréhendée uniquement sous l'angle des institutions ou d'une mécanique verticale et dualiste. Le modèle festif niçois, carnaval-spectacle, suscite aussi des discours d'opposition ainsi que des alternatives avec un contre-modèle permettant d'interroger la définition même du carnaval. Les formes de renouvellement, par exemple à travers le carnaval gay (Queernaval), témoignent d'une réappropriation de la fête par des acteurs locaux. Du point de vue technique, la construction du carnaval se définit comme un métier à part entire, structuré en entreprises spécialisées dirigées par des lignées familiales locales. Le choix de l'artisanat du carnaval peut être animé par une passion mais il peut également représenter une opportunité professionnelle. Enfin, la fabrique de la fête s'appréhende par sa dimension matérielle en sollicitant des techniques, des savoir-faire. La fabrication des objets, essentielle dans un défilé qui met en scène des éléments matériels, constitue un autre niveau d'analyse. Ces objets se définissent comme des créations de l'éphémère mais ils peuvent être aussi donnés, revendus, patrimonialisés changeant ainsi de statuts et de rôles au cours de leur biographie.

After the Decolonial examines the sources of Latin American decolonial thought, its reading of precursors like Fanon and Levinas and its historical interpretations. In extended treatments of the anthropology of ethnicity, law and religion and of the region’s modern culture, Lehmann sets out the bases of a more grounded interpretation, drawing inspiration from Mexico, Brazil, Bolivia and Chile, and from a lifelong engagement with issues of development, religion and race. The decolonial places race at the centre of its interpretation of injustice and, together with the multiple other exclusions dividing Latin American societies, traces it to European colonialism. But it has not fully absorbed the uniquely unsettling nature of Latin American race relations, which perpetuate prejudice and inequality, yet are marked by métissage, pervasive borrowing and mimesis. Moreover, it has not integrated its own disruptive feminist branch, and it has taken little interest in either the interwoven history of indigenous religion and hegemonic Catholicism or the evangelical tsunami which has upended so many assumptions about the region’s culture. The book concludes that in Latin America, where inequality and violence are more severe than anywhere else, and where COVID-19 has revealed the deplorable state of the institutions charged with ensuring the basic requirements of life, the time has come to instate a universalist concept of social justice, encompassing a comprehensive approach to race, gender, class and human rights.

Cette recherche doctorale s’inscrit dans l’interface entre les domaines de l’anthropologie urbaine, de l’anthropologie des formes sensibles, de l’anthropologie visuelle et de l’anthropologie politique. Elle répond à une supposition du sens commun brésilien qui perçoit le carnaval comme une politique publique du pain et des jeux, comme un processus d’aliénation du peuple. Nous chercherons à montrer que le carnaval va au-delà d’un simple divertissement, qu’il est ancré dans la culture populaire et fait partie de l’identité nationale, en plus de mettre en négociation la micro politique au quotidien avec la macro politique gouvernementale. À partir d’une ethnographie menée sur le carnaval des écoles de samba dans la ville de Rio de Janeiro, cette étude s’intéresse aux rapports de résistance et d’adhésion entre les sujets qui font la fête carnavalesque, l’État et les bailleurs de fonds du carnaval qui prônent des mesures de normalisation et de purification du carnaval. Le but de cette thèse est de faire comprendre la complexité de la fête carnavalesque brésilienne, au-delà d’une perception dichotomique. Le carnaval, en même temps, qui fait partie de la macrostructure politique nationale et gouvernementale, a lieu grâce aux failles, aux brèches, aux lacunes et aux fissures de ce système, qui permettent que le carnaval perdure à partir d’un intense processus d’agenceité entre les différents acteurs en scène. Le carnaval est multiple. Il est à la fois une manifestation de la culture populaire, une politique publique de construction de l’identité sociale, une politique d’unification de la société brésilienne, un spectacle commercial et globalisé, une festivité traversée par le processus de marchandisation de la culture populaire, une fête qui se bat pour demeurer populaire. Le carnaval présente cette multitude de facettes qui sont en constante négociation. En étant populaire, il possède une identité bricoleuse qui réinvente sa tradition dans un processus d’agenceité entre ses acteurs sociaux.

The images of migrants and refugees arriving in precarious boats on the shores of southern Europe, and of the makeshift camps that have sprung up in Lesbos, Lampedusa, Calais and elsewhere, have become familiar sights on television screens around the world. But what do we know about the border places – these liminal zones between countries and continents – that have become the focus of so much attention and anxiety today, and what do we know about the individuals who occupy these places? In this timely book, anthropologist Michel Agier addresses these questions and examines the character of the borderlands that emerge on the margins of nation-states. Drawing on his ethnographic fieldwork, he shows that borders, far from disappearing, have acquired a new kind of centrality in our societies, becoming reference points for the growing numbers of people who do not find a place in the countries they wish to reach. They have become the site for a new kind of subject, the border dweller, who is both inside and outside, enclosed on the one hand and excluded on the other, and who is obliged to learn, under harsh conditions, the ways of the world and of other people. In this respect, the lives of migrants, even in the uncertainties or dangers of the borderlands, tell us something about the condition in which everyone is increasingly living today, a cosmopolitan condition in which the experience of the unfamiliar is more common and the relation between self and other is in constant renewal.

Migration is both a demographic and a cultural phenomenon. As such, it both reshapes the global village and subverts the all-encompassing vision of the city, a space split between the blending of all new cultures and the need felt by many migrants to maintain their traditions and thereby contribute to a multicultural mosaic. This series of essays explores how the concepts of the melting-pot and the mosaic have shaped the representation of Paris and Montreal in francophone literatures. Migrant movements to these cities from the Caribbean, the Maghreb, Sub-Saharan Africa, Quebec, Indochina, and the Indian Ocean have produced new groups of intersecting cultures. Under the dual influences of their native and host countries, migrants have produced an innovative and multifaceted literature that reflects their composite world-view. Their writing poses pressing questions of ethnicity, immigration, integration, and citizenship, and challenges longstanding notions both of the concept of the city and of how its spaces embody and articulate Frenchness in the face of ongoing change. Such shifts produce changes not only in the diasporic culture, but in the national culture as well, through creolization processes. These shifting identities increasingly destabilize current notions of national membership and social and cultural belonging, since we can no longer presume a direct correspondence between place, culture, language and identity. They also pose new questions of national identity and difference as the immigrant presence expands and inflects the cosmopolitan pluralism of today’s societies.
