Cet article se propose d'examiner quelques traits fondamentaux de l'évolution du travail dans le contexte de la mondialisation pour souligner, paradoxalement, une tendance au renforcement de l'emprise des sociétés civiles sur le travail. Il défend la thèse que le paradigme individualiste de l'implication est réinterprété par les travailleurs sous une forme très différente, saisissable dans la durée biographique. En second lieu, il souligne le lien entre l'entrée massive des femmes sur la marché du travail et l'émergence du groupe domestique dans les villes, ce qui modifie substantiellement le rapport paternaliste au fondement des sociétés et, à travers lui, le rapport social capitaliste. Enfin, il montre que les efforts des sociétés civiles concernant la mise en place d'un label social de production, ainsi que l'action de certains mouvements sociaux innovants internes ou externes au syndicalisme introduisent une conception de "l'efficacité sociétale", observable à différentes échelles, qui s'inscrit en contradiction avec la stratégie du capital financier.
