Die Religion, die im vorherigen Buch neben der Mystik ein Randdasein führte, tritt jetzt in den Vordergrund. Für die Neuauflage hat Ernst Tugendhat den Band um zwei neue Beiträge erweitert: "Nazismus und Universalismus. Ist die universalistische Moral historisch erklärbar?" und "Noch einmal über normative Gleichheit". Was immer Metaphysik heißen mag, es reduziert sich, so die These dieses Buches, auf Anthropologie, weil alle metaphysischen Themen sich als Elemente des menschlichen Verstehens erweisen. Sodann kommt Ernst Tugendhat noch zu einer anderen Erklärung für den Primat der Anthropologie: Alles Historische verliert seine Gültigkeit für uns, wenn es sich nur aus Tradition begründen läßt; und so bleibt die Frage nach dem Sein des Menschen übrig, wenn alles, was nur zu Traditionen gehört, wie ein Vorhang weggezogen wird. Was aber ist philosophische Anthropologie, und wodurch unterscheidet sie sich von der empirischen Anthropologie? Das Buch geht diesen Fragen nach und widmet sich daneben anthropologischen Einzelthemen wie Willensfreiheit, intellektuelle Redlichkeit, Moral und Religion.

So kommt es dazu, dass sehr unterschiedliche Arten von Aussagen einen Anspruch auf philosophische Geltung erheben. Im Verlauf der Arbeit soll aufgezeigt werden, wie sich diese Probleme konkret äußern, zu welchen Konsequenzen sie führen und wie sich diese vermeiden lassen können. Der in dieser Arbeit problematisierte Sachverhalt ist einfach. Er bezieht sich jedoch nicht auf ein spezifisches Problem aus der philosophischen Anthropologie, sondern auf die Frage, welche Aussagetypen gemäß eines sinnvoll-rekonstruierten Begriffs der philosophischen Anthropologie überhaupt unter diesen fallen können.

Diesbezügliche religiöse bzw. traditionelle Antworten, die sich in den letzten Jahrtausenden herausbildeten und vorherrschten, haben erheblich an Glaubwürdigkeit verloren, da sie dem langsam angewachsenen Primat der Vernunft nicht mehr standhalten konnten. Doch durch das Wegbrechen alter Erklärungsansätze entstand ein moralisches Vakuum, gekennzeichnet durch einen absoluten Werterelativismus, der zu einer Orientierungslosigkeit und einem starken Sinn-Bedürfnis führte. Wonach soll man sich richten bzw. welchem Vorbild folgen? Auf welcher Grundlage lässt sich ein Leben führen, das weder traditionsverfälscht, noch an höheren Mächten orientiert ist, sondern sich allein auf den Menschen beruft? Die Frage nach dem spezifisch menschlichen Wesen stellt sich daraufhin unausweichlich, denn nichts könnte besser als Ausgangspunkt für begründete Antworten dienen. Ein Grundkonsens über das Wesen des Menschen scheint damit als Richtschnur beim Aufbau eines säkularisierten Seins, aber auch Miteinanders unabdingbar. Sollte dieses Vorhaben gelingen, wird der Mensch zum selbstverantwortlichen Architekten seiner Umwelt, Geschichte und Identität, im individuellen wie im universellen Sinne. Großen Anteil an dieser Unternehmung hat der Philosoph Ernst Tugendhat. Seit mehreren Jahren macht er den Menschen zum Thema seiner Arbeit und betreibt eine philosophische Anthropologie, die nach neuen, fundierten Antworten sucht. In seinem Aufsatz „Anthropologie als erste Philosophie“ bezieht sich Tugendhat direkt auf dieses Thema und versucht, über eine analytische Wesensbestimmung des Menschen, eine Antwort auf die Möglichkeit eines guten Lebens zu geben. Die Frage „Was sind wir als Menschen?“, die er als den zentralen Kern der Philosophie ansieht, gewinnt für ihn eine neue Aktualität und wird zum Ausgangspunkt für das heutige und zukünftige Menschsein. Das Ziel dieser Hausarbeit besteht darin, Tugendhats fragmentarische Ausführungen zum Wesen des Menschen aus mehreren seiner Texte zusammenzutragen und anschließend komprimiert, allein mit dem Fokus auf das sich daraus ergebende Menschenbild darzustellen, da dies so bislang nicht existiert.

This volume aims to make a significant contribution to the debate surrounding the renaissance of Kant studies in the last few decades, with a particular emphasis upon some 'problems of reason'. Like no other, Kant covered the entire breadth of the modern debate concerning the concept of reason and its forms. Accordingly, despite the range of topics this volume inevitably deals with, Immanuel Kant remains the common point of reference for all contributions. The volume is divided into two sections. The first section is dedicated to Kant's philosophy in particular and its relationship with the philosophies of Kant's predecessors. From the perspective of the history of philosophy, interpretations of the significance of different philosophical traditions concerning Kant's thought will be given, and of the relationship of Kant's thought to the problems of reason with which Kant and his predecessors dealt. The second section is dedicated to the legacy of Kant's philosophy. The relevance of the concept of rationality for the genesis and systematics of post-Kantian ideas of rationality will be discussed, and the potential of Kant's critical philosophy - for contemporary thought as well - will be examined.
