Toward an Anthropology of Nation Building and Unbuilding in Israel presents twenty-two original essays offering a critical survey of the anthropology of Israel inspired by Alex Weingrod, emeritus professor and pioneering scholar of Israeli anthropology. In the late 1950s Weingrod’s groundbreaking ethnographic research of Israel’s underpopulated south complicated the dominant social science discourse and government policy of the day by focusing on the ironies inherent in the project of Israeli nation building and on the process of migration prompted by social change. Drawing from Weingrod’s perspective, this collection considers the gaps, ruptures, and juxtapositions in Israeli society and the cultural categories undergirding and subverting these divisions. Organized into four parts, the volume examines our understanding of Israel as a place of difference, the disruptions and integrations of diaspora, the various permutations of Judaism, and the role of symbol in the national landscape and in Middle Eastern studies considered from a comparative perspective. Blind People approaches disability from a fresh perspective: people with an unusual body are conceived of relativistically as a variant of humanity, much the way anthropology approaches people of different culture. While deeply empathic to its subject matter, Blind People raises questions that anthropologists ask routinely, but which are commonly avoided in everyday life because they touch on sensitive matters. Based on fieldwork in Israel, the book constitutes an ethnography of blind Israelis. It starts by focusing on intimate issues of the management of the sightless body, goes on to discuss the role of the blind person in the domestic setting, and moves to issues of how the blind person strives to attain material requirements. Finally, the book relates the way blind people cope with problems of associating with both blind and sighted people in arenas of leisure activity and public affairs. Moroccan born Israeli anthropologist Andre Levy here presents a deeply nuanced and highly readable study of the relations between Moroccan Jews and Muslims past and present. Levy s return to his birthplace in Casablanca proceeds through several interrelated settings. There is the first encounter of return, fraught with fear and uncertainty when, as an Israeli arriving with papers granted by a third nation to come back to a country that has both repelled him and encouraged his permanent return, he finds his worries multiplied by the events of the Gulf War. As if he were behind enemy lines he approaches everything with understandable trepidation only to discover directly what he had long known intellectually, that Morocco continues to relate to its Jewish population with all the features of its historic ambivalence and ambiguity on full display. As he moves through the different contexts and domains of his return he addresses these factors in ways both personal and analytic. As the book progresses the reader is introduced to a variety of other contexts of the Moroccan Jewish experience. From the card players and beach etiquette, to the shared use of public baths and the visits by Muslims to Jewish ritual events the reader catches the sense of old patterns now approached with great wariness by a population that is much diminished both in size and in the daily experience of the dominant Muslim population.
