Ist von der Vermessungslehre des menschlichen Körpers in anthropologischen Klassifizierungen die Rede, steht immer auch der Zusammenhang von Charakter und Physis zur Debatte: Die Vermessung des Menschen in der Kulturgeschichte impliziert stets aufs neue die alte philosophische Frage, was der Mensch eigentlich sei. Den Nerv des modernen Bewußtseins trifft der Theologe Lavater, dessen Physiognomik gerade ex negativo beweist, "daß einfache Beziehungen zwischen Innen und Außen nicht mehr zu erwarten sind, daß Verstehen ein nicht zu hintergehendes Problem ist". Goethe, Lichtenberg und Kant betonen denn auch das Rätselhafte der Oberfläche, den Bruch zwischen Sein und Schein, hinter den das kritische Bewußtsein des Aufklärungszeitalters nicht mehr zurückfallen will. Doch der Menschen bleibt ein auf Mißverstehen angelegtes Wesen: Die Vermessung des Zusammenspiels von Körper und Seele gebiert seit Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts zum Beispiel in der Medizin heterogene, miteinander konkurrierende Konzepte, die zwischen Naturphilosophie und Naturwissenschaft schwanken. So orientiert sich der Arzt und Hirnforscher Gall noch an Lavaters Physiognomik, während er die Körper-Geist-Problematik zu einem Gegenstand der Biologie macht, der italienische Anthropologe Cesare Lombroso versucht den Typus des "geborenen Verbrechers" nachzuweisen. Dieser Versuch, naturwissenschaftliche Exaktheit auf das Gebiet der Gesellschaft zu übertragen, steht in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts nicht allein. Die Daten der "Bertillonage" und die Daktyloskopie sind Meilensteine auf dem Weg zur Biometrie von heute. Ernährungswissenschaft, Ergonomie, Wachstum, Medienkunst auf der einen Seite, Sicherheitswahn und Datensucht auf der anderen bezeugen die ambivalent anmutende Entwicklung der Anthropometrie bis hin zum aktuellen Durchbruch computergenerierter Geschöpfe, der Avatare, die laut Multimedia-Branche "die besseren Menschen" sein sollen, da sie "jederzeit auf die Bedürfnisse der Konsumenten zugeschnitten werden" können. An der Grenze zwischen Realität und virtueller Welt - Kubrick/Spielbergs modernes Kinomärchen "A.I." streicht es überdeutlich heraus - scheint die Aufhebung des Zusammenhangs von Sein und Schein fast nicht mehr illusorisch.
