Analyzes how Catholics viewed the Jews during the years 1870-2005, based on material (the press, brochures, etc.) found at the University of Utrecht and the Catholic Documentation Center in Nijmegen (KDC). The first Vatican Council in 1870 declared the Pope infallible; the Pope considered Jews as adversaries, which encouraged antisemitism. The Jewish religion was seen as messianic, and at the same time as devilish. Addresses religious and modern antisemitism, Catholic Judeophilia, Zionism, Jewish religiosity, and racial prejudices. In 1942, the Catholic Church protested officially against the deportation of Jews. Ca. 1960, the dangers of antisemitism and the Catholic recognition of the Jewish influence on the Christian Scriptures led to the development of a theological dialogue and to official recognition of the Jewish State of Israel by the Catholic Church in 1993.

This book analyses the portrayals of the Holocaust in newspaper cartoons, educational pamphlets, short stories and graphic novels. Focusing on recognised and lesser-known illustrators from Europe and beyond, the volume looks at autobiographical and fictional accounts and seeks to paint a broader picture of Holocaust comic strips from the 1940s to the present. The book shows that the genre is a capacious one, not only dealing with the killing of millions of Jews but also with Jewish lives in war-torn Europe, the personal and transgenerational memory of the Second World War and the wider national and transnational legacies of the Shoah. The chapters in this collection point to the aesthetic diversity of the genre which uses figurative and allegorical representation, as well as applying different stylistics, from realism to fantasy. Finally, the contributions to this volume show new developments in comic books and graphic novels on the Holocaust, including the rise of alternative publications, aimed at the adult reader, and the emergence of state-funded educational comics written with young readers in mind. Neither white, nor brown.’ This ‘Indo’ was part of the Indo-Europeans, a group of mixed indigenous and European ancestry, from the former Dutch East Indies. In almost all other Asian colonies, including British India and French Indochina, which are also covered in this study, such a group of mixed ancestry came into being. The future of these Eurasians after decolonisation was quite insecure. The European rulers, on which their status was based, were gone. The new indigenous rulers perceived them suspiciously as colonial remnants and often even as traitors. In this chaotic situation, they were forced to make a choice, between staying in the former colony or leaving for the European mother country. Did they belong in the country of their European fathers or the former colony, the country of their Asian mothers?

Zij werden vanaf de eerste dag van de bezetting ontslagen en vervolgd, als eerste slachtoffers van het naziregime. Vele werden gedeporteerd en omgebracht. Als journalist én als Jood stonden zij bovenaan de zwarte lijst. Hun vervolging werd voorafgegaan door jaren van antisemitische vooroordelen en propaganda, die hen brandmerkte als ‘leugenpers’. Nadat Joodse journalisten door de Duitse bezetter waren uitgeschakeld werd de voltallige Nederlandse pers stap voor stap ‘gelijkgeschakeld’, dat wil zeggen genazificeerd. Toch kwam de waarheid van de Holocaust stukje bij beetje aan het licht, mede dankzij Joodse ooggetuigen en klokkenluiders. Dubbel zondebok is een belangrijk historisch overzichtswerk, dat gelezen kan worden als een waarschuwing nu antisemitisme, complottheorieën en nepnieuws weer krachtig oplaaien. Tevens is het een monument ter nagedachtenis aan de vele Joodse journalisten die Nederland rijk was.

Een groot deel van de Europese Roma en Sinti leidt een marginaal bestaan. De meesten hebben zo weinig scholing dat ze weinig perspectief hebben op een betere toekomst. Zij hebben nauwelijks geprofiteerd van de verbeterde toegang tot het onderwijs voor mensen uit de lagere sociaaleconomische klassen vanaf 1950. Hoe kan het dat het in de afgelopen zeventig jaar slechts zo weinig Roma en Sinti gelukt is om door te stromen naar het hoger onderwijs? Voor Wegbereiders interviewde Anita van der Hulst meer dan vijftig Roma en Sinti in Nederland en Tsjechië. Zij vertellen openhartig over hun ervaringen, in het leven in het algemeen en in het onderwijs in het bijzonder. Nederland en Tsjechië zijn landen met een sterk verschillende naoorlogse geschiedenis. Een vergelijking tussen die twee landen maakt inzichtelijk welke drempels Roma en Sinti moeten overwinnen om kans te maken op stijging op de sociale ladder.
