Die Erkrankung ist durch eine Störung im Knochenstoffwechsel gekennzeichnet, wodurch die Knochenmasse über das normale Maß hinaus abnimmt und die Knochenstruktur beeinträchtigt wird. Dies hat zur Folge dass der Knochen im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes porös wird und an Stabilität verliert. Geringe Belastungen wie etwa kleine Stürze, das Heben der Einkaufstasche oder das Bücken oder Niesen können zu Brüchen führen. Der Begriff „Osteoporose“ kommt aus dem Griechischen und lässt sich folgendermaßen übersetzen: „Osteo“ heißt Knochen, „porose“ leitet sich von porös ab und bezeichnet die Höhlenbildung in Organen.
