The "reminiscence bump" is a frequently reported effect in autobiographical memory in which older adults recall significantly more events from their teens, twenties, and early thirties than from any other period of life. This study examined the degree to which this same "bump effect" is observed in college-age students as they anticipate life events from their current age until their expected age of death. Sixty-five younger adults (17-20 years, M = 18.88, SD = 1.63) drew life-lines depicting the "ups and downs" in the anticipated course of their life in terms of positive and negative events. Participants indicated the location of each anticipated event and provided their age at the time of the event. The distance above or below the line provide a measure of the degree to which each event was perceived as positive or negative. A total of 651 life events were recorded. In addition, the current study investigated other variables thought to be related to the way individuals anticipate future life events. The differences and relationships seen in anticipated future life events with regards to their past, generative concern, personality, locus of control, and balanced time perspective were investigated. Consistent with the presence of a reminiscence bump in older adults as they recall events in their past, younger adults in this study displayed a strong "anticipation bump" in which events from the late teens, twenties, and early thirties were identified as encompassing a larger percentage of future life events than from middle age or later life. Fifty-seven percent of all anticipated events fell in this young adult period, compared with 16.9% falling in the 40s and 50s and 26.1% of events falling above the age of 60.

Evidence suggests that stories are used universally to describe a series of events (Barthes, 1977). One reason for this universality may be that narrative aids in understanding and predicting social situations. Narrative structures provide information about what can be expected in a given situation--as well as what might go wrong. In a series of four experiments, I explored the inferential advantage of narrative by examining whether narrative goals facilitate one's ability to make explanatory and predictive inferences among social stimuli. Using both explicit and implicit measures, I found that when individuals are instructed to create a story from a sequence of events, they are more likely to draw both explanatory and predictive inferences from the given events than when they are given other organizational goals. This initial investigation suggests that narrative construction may be an adaptive strategy used to explain the causes of past events and anticipate future events.

Where are we at the turn of the millennium? In contrast to the current mood of millennial pessimism, the authors take an optimistic view of human history. Surveying the 20,000 years from the end of the last ice age to 7,000 AD, this ambitious book is part history, part current events, and part science fiction. It takes issue with those who say we are seeing the 'decline of the West' or a looming 'clash of civilisations'. What is truly important about our age only becomes apparent when we see the present both as a product of the past and as the maker of the future. The authors take a long look back at our real history, and an equally long look back at our present from various points in the future. They conclude that the human story, with all of its ups and downs, is basically one of progress, and that our own time is a major turning point.

Complexity And The Function Of Mind In Nature written by Peter Godfrey-Smith and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-09-28 with Philosophy categories.

This book explains the relationship between intelligence and environmental complexity, and in so doing links philosophy of mind to more general issues about the relations between organisms and environments, and to the general pattern of 'externalist' explanations. The author provides a biological approach to the investigation of mind and cognition in nature. In particular he explores the idea that the function of cognition is to enable agents to deal with environmental complexity. The history of the idea in the work of Dewey and Spencer is considered, as is the impact of recent evolutionary theory on our understanding of the place of mind in nature.

Drought. Wildfire. Extreme flooding. How does climate change affect the daily work of scientists? Ecological restoration is often premised on the idea of returning a region to an earlier, healthier state. Yet the effects of climate change undercut that premise and challenge the ways scientists can work, destabilizing the idea of “normalcy” and revealing the politics that shape what scientists can do. How can the practice of ecological restoration shift to anticipate an increasingly dynamic future? And how does a scientific field itself adapt to climate change? Restoration efforts in the Columbia River Basin—a vast and diverse landscape experiencing warming waters, less snowpack, and greater fluctuations in precipitation—may offer answers to some of these questions. Shana Hirsch tells the story of restoration science in the basin, surveying its past and detailing the work of today’s salmon habitat restoration efforts. Her analysis offers critical insight into scientific practices, emerging approaches and ways of thinking, the incorporation of future climate change scenarios into planning, and the ultimate transformation—or adaptation—of the science of ecological restoration. For scientists and environmental managers around the globe, Anticipating Future Environments will shed light on how to more effectively cope with climate change.

People are using the future to search for better ways to achieve sustainability, inclusiveness, prosperity, well-being and peace. In addition, the way the future is understood and used is changing in almost all domains, from social science to daily life. This book presents the results of significant research undertaken by UNESCO with a number of partners to detect and define the theory and practice of anticipation around the world today. It uses the concept of ‘Futures Literacy’ as a tool to define the understanding of anticipatory systems and processes – also known as the Discipline of Anticipation. This innovative title explores: • new topics such as Futures Literacy and the Discipline of Anticipation; • the evidence collected from over 30 Futures Literacy Laboratories and presented in 14 full case studies; • the need and opportunity for significant innovation in human decision-making systems. This book will be of great interest to scholars, researchers, policy-makers and students, as well as activists working on sustainability issues and innovation, future studies and anticipation studies. The world changes like the patterns in a kaleidoscope: trends expand, contract, break up, melt, disintegrate and disappear, while others are formed. Change – as opposed to stasis – is our normal condition, the only certainty in our lives, hence the need to create tools that provide organizations with the means to tackle change and navigate complexity. We must accept the reality of constant change and be prepared for a heavy shift in perspective: interconnection versus separation, acceleration versus linearity and discontinuity versus continuity. Anticipating the future requires more than the traditional predictive models (forecasting) based on the forward projection of past experiences. Advanced methods use anticipation logic (foresight) and build probable scenarios taking into account weak signals, emerging trends, coexisting presents and potential paths of evolution. Corporate foresight is fundamental to interpret and lead change. The two cornerstones of foresight are organization and management. As concerns organization, the authors advocate the separation of research (oriented to the market of tomorrow) from development (oriented to the market of today), the establishment of a foresight unit and the concentration of research activities mainly on the acquisition and recombination of external know-how. As regards management, after an overview of state-of-the-art literature on forecasting methods, the authors propose the implementation of a "future coverage" methodology, which enables companies to measure and verify the consistency between trends, strategic vision and offered products. These organizational and managing tools are then tested in a case study: the Italian company Eurotech SpA, a leader in the ICT sector.
