Antigone freut sich darauf, so sagt sie, nach der Tat zu sterben und mit ihrem lieben Bruder auf immer zusammenzuliegen. Ein gefährlicher Krieger näherte sich der Stadt, Adrast von Argos, mit dem Polyneikes sich verbündet hatte. Die Angreifer wollten die Türme der Stadt in Brand setzen, doch die Thebaner konnten sie zurückschlagen; dabei stützten sie sich auf die Hilfe der Götter Zeus und Ares. Prior to the beginning of the play, brothers Eteocles and Polyneices, leading opposite sides in Thebes' civil war, died fighting each other for the throne. Creon, the new ruler of Thebes and brother of the former Queen Jocasta, has decided that Eteocles will be honored and Polyneices will be in public shame. The rebel brother's body will not be sanctified by holy rites and will lie unburied on the battlefield, prey for carrion animals like worms and vultures, the harshest punishment at the time. Antigone and Ismene are the sisters of the dead Polyneices and Eteocles. In the opening of the play, Antigone brings Ismene outside the palace gates late at night for a secret meeting: Antigone wants to bury Polyneices' body, in defiance of Creon's edict. Ismene refuses to help her, not believing that it will actually be possible to bury their brother, who is under guard, but she is unable to stop Antigone from going to bury her brother herself.

Tout en reconnaissant la justesse du geste, Ismène refuse de la suivre dans cette entreprise ( je cède à la force je n'ai rien à gagner à me rebeller ).Alors qu'Antigone s'en va accomplir ce qu'elle estime être son devoir religieux, Créon développe devant le choeur des vieillards thébains - des conseillers, représentant la sagesse - sa philosophie politique (le service de la cité, le bien du peuple) et se propose à l'épreuve du commandement et des lois. Il y glisse une menace voilée adressée au Coryphée, le soupçonnant de corruption (au service des esprits rebelles). Il faut noter que lors du règne d'OEdipe, Créon menait une vie de fortune tranquille, comme un roi, sans toutefois devoir se soucier de toutes les angoisses du pouvoir.

Exploring the power of Antigone in a variety of political, cultural, and theoretical settings, Honig identifies the 'Antigone-effect' - which moves those who enlist Antigone for their politics from activism into lamentation. She argues that Antigone's own lamentations can be seen not just as signs of dissidence but rather as markers of a rival world view with its own sovereignty and vitality. The celebrated author of Gender Trouble here redefines Antigone's legacy, recovering her revolutionary significance and liberating it for a progressive feminism and sexual politics. Butler's new interpretation does nothing less than reconceptualize the incest taboo in relation to kinship—and open up the concept of kinship to cultural change. Antigone, the renowned insurgent from Sophocles's Oedipus, has long been a feminist icon of defiance. But what has remained unclear is whether she escapes from the forms of power that she opposes. Antigone proves to be a more ambivalent figure for feminism than has been acknowledged, since the form of defiance she exemplifies also leads to her death. Butler argues that Antigone represents a form of feminist and sexual agency that is fraught with risk. Moreover, Antigone shows how the constraints of normative kinship unfairly decide what will and will not be a livable life. Butler explores the meaning of Antigone, wondering what forms of kinship might have allowed her to live. Along the way, she considers the works of such philosophers as Hegel, Lacan, and Irigaray.
