Bysantti – Tuhat draaman vuotta on kertomus Bysantin eli Itä-Rooman valtakunnasta, sitä repivistä sisäpoliittisista ja uskonnollisista kriiseistä sekä sen hallitsijoiden teoista ja kohtaloista yli tuhannen vuoden ajalta. Bysantin jokaisen 94 keisarin valtakausi on oma tarinansa. Jokaisen keisarin tuli ottaa valta haltuunsa, varmistaa se ja lunastaa teoillaan oikeutus siihen. Jokainen heistä joutui vallasta myös luopumaan. Keisarien kohtalot ja ratkaisut tekevät Bysantin historiasta elävän ja näyttävät omalta osaltaan, miksi Bysantista tuli yksi historian pitkäikäisimmistä valtioista. Bysantin vaikutus säteilee myös meidän aikaamme. Roomalaisen hallinnon, kreikkalaisen kulttuurin ja kristinuskon kautta se on vaikuttanut Euroopan poliittiseen ja kulttuuriseen karttaan ja heijastunut jopa Suomeen - enemmän kuin olemme tulleet ajatelleeksi. On aika tutustua tähän mahtavaan keisarikuntaan. Professori Paavo Hohti (s. 1944) on tutkinut ja suomentanut antiikin Kreikan ja Bysantin kirjallisuutta ja toiminut dosenttina sekä Helsingin että Tampereen yliopistossa. Päätyönsä hän on tehnyt Suomen Kulttuurirahaston johtajana ja Säätiöiden ja rahastojen neuvottelukunnan toimitusjohtajana.
