The Pygmalion myth, most famously told by Ovid in his Metamorphoses, has always fascinated artists. This fascination, due to the erotic potential of the story, resulted in an abundance of patriarchal re-narrations from the Middle Ages to the late 19th century. With the turn of the 20th century, however, the Pygmalion stories gradually changed under the influence of feminist thought and emancipation. The woman created by Pygmalion no longer remained a passive creature but began to resist her master and his male fantasies, sometimes in a subtle way, sometimes in open rebellion. The study at hand focuses on the development of the tale in the Anglo-Saxon literature of the 20th and 21st centuries. The art of the emblem is a pan-European phenomenon which developed in Western and Central Europe in the early modern period. It adopted meanings and motifs from Antiquity and the Middle Ages as part of a general humanistic impulse. Technological developments in printing that permitted the combination of letterpress with woodblock, and later copperplate, images, ensured that the emblem spread rapidly by way of printed collections. With time, emblematic ideas moved beyond Europe, conveying their insights and wisdom in the compact form of the book. These same books came to influence artists and designers working in the decoration of buildings, furniture, and household items, so that emblems entered personal life; they infiltrated festive culture, too. In such environments beyond the book, emblems were transported, adapted, and embedded in new functional contexts shaped by social, political, or religious conditions, but also by architectonical and regional art historical parameters. The results of these transformations are often of an intricate and complex meaning. The combination of word and image that constitutes the emblem still has resonance in contemporary art and architecture. The study of emblems allows us to look back at the collaborative endeavours of creative minds of earlier times from across Europe and beyond. At a time when that continent is under strain, and the world in general seeks to come to terms with globalization, emblems allow reflection on strongly shared cultural values and connections.

Das True Intellectual System of the Universe des englischen Philosophen Ralph Cudworth (1617-1688) gilt als Höhepunkt der Philosophie der Cambridge Platonists. In ihm bündelt Cudworth die zentralen Probleme der Naturphilosophie und Theologie seiner Zeit und versucht, sie einer Lösung zuzuführen, die umfänglich erklärt, wie Gott in der Natur wirkt. Die vorliegende Arbeit zeigt erstmalig umfassend, wie Cudworth sein neuplatonisches System aus einer kongenialen Verbindung von Textform und Inhalt entwickelt und dabei zugleich ein komplettes Panorama der antiken Philosophie entfaltet. Dabei zeigt sich, dass Cudworths welterklärendes System aus dem system- und sinngenerierenden Zusammenspiel der (spät-)antiken Referenztexte hervorgeht: Es basiert auf einem neuplatonischen Prinzipien- und Gottesbegriff und lässt die Struktur der Welt als ein intelligibles Kräftekontinuum verstehbar werden, das seinen Ursprung in einem vernünftigen Gott besitzt. Gleichzeitig berücksichtigt die vorliegende Untersuchung, wie dieser metaphysische Inhalt leserlenkend und gleichsam performativ inszeniert wird und derart beim Lesen eine intelligible Einsicht hervorbringen kann.

Grundsätzlich stellt sich dabei die Frage, ob es so etwas wie eine „römische Identität“ gegeben hat und was darunter in dem hier zu betrachtenden Zeitraum verstanden wurde. Wenn dieser Beweis erbracht wird, stellt sich die Frage, auf welchen Ebenen Identitätskonstituierung überhaupt möglich war und vollzogen wurde. Inwiefern schuf die Konstruktion einer Identität für das Imperium existentielle Grundlagen, und welche Bedeutung darf dieser Identität in einer Epoche des Wandels mit signifikanten Zäsuren zukommen? Zu beweisen ist, ob die Konstruktion einer Identität im Zuge des Transformationsprozesses Konsequenzen für das Fortbestehen und Überleben des Imperium Romanum in Zeiten des Umbruchs und der „Krise“ hatte. Auf diesen Fragen aufbauend verfolgt die Arbeit folgende Struktur: Zunächst soll der Identitätsbegriff für den Gebrauch in diesem spezifischen Kontext definiert werden. Mithilfe dieser methodischen Grundlage soll im zweiten Kapitel der Identitätsbegriff auf das Römische Reich angewendet werden. Es soll gezeigt werden, dass das Imperium Romanum sich aufgrund verschiedener Transformationsprozesse zu einem Imperium Christianum wandelte. Die Identität des neuen Imperiums konnte einerseits durch die Selbstbestimmung und andererseits durch die Abgrenzung zum Fremden gefestigt werden. Auf drei Dimensionen der Selbstbestimmung (III.1a. Erziehung und Bildung; b. Kaiserideologie; c. Staatlichkeit) soll gezeigt werden, wie die christliche Lehre in die römische Gesellschaft eindringen konnte und an der Konstruktion einer neuen Identität mitwirkte. Die Abgrenzung zum Fremden erfolgte durch die Gegenübersetzung des „Hellenen“ und des „Barbaren“. Diese identitätsstiftende Ordnung sah sich in der Spätantike mehrmals existentiell bedroht. Ein Identitätsverlust hätte zum Auseinanderfallen der imperialen Ordnung geführt. Besonders in solchen „Krisenzeiten“ bemühte man sich radikal und konsequent um eine Identitätssicherung (IV. 1-3). Die Transformation der ursprünglich klassisch-römischen Identität zur christlich-römischen wurde zu Zeiten der Bedrohung beschleunigt.

This book explores Symbolist artists' fascination with ancient Greek art and myth, and how the erotic played a major role in this. For a brief period at the end of the 19th century the Symbolist movement inspired artists to turn inwards to the unconscious mind, endeavouring to unveil the secrets of human nature through their symbolic art. But above all their greatest interest, and fear, was man (and woman's) sexuality. Building upon the traditions of Academic neoclassicism, but fired with a new zeal, they turned back to Greek art and myth for inspiration. That classical legacy was once again a vehicle for artists to express their dreams, ideas and revelries. And so too their anxieties. For at times the frightening spectre of the sexual unconscious drove them to a new and innovative engagement with antiquity, including in ways never before tried in the history of the classical tradition. The unnerving sirens of Gustave Moreau, unearthly heroines of Odilon Redon, or leering fauns of Felicien Rops all played their role, among others, in this novel and unprecedented chapter in that tradition. This book shows how in their painting, drawing and sculpture the Symbolists re-invented Greek statuary and transposed it to new and unwonted contexts, as the imaginary inner worlds of artists were mapped onto the landscapes of Greek myth. It shows how they made of the Greek body, whether female, male, androgyne or sexual other, at once an object of beauty, desire, fear, and - at times - of horror.

The debate that has arisen around the concept of the Anthropocene forms the basis of this book. It investigates certain forms of environmental interrelation and 'ecological' sensitivity in the Graeco-Roman world. The notions of environmental depletion, exploitation and loss of plant species, and the ancients' knowledge of species diversity are the main cores of the research. The aim is to interrogate historical sources and diverse evidence and to analyse political and socioeconomic structures, according to a reading focused on possible antecedents, cultural prodromes, alignments of thought or divergencies, with respect to major modern environmental problems and current ecological conceptualisations. As a result, 'sustainable' behaviour, 'biodiversity' and its practical uses can also be identified in ancient societies. In the context of environmental studies, this contribution is placed from the perspective of a historian of antiquity, with the aim of outlining the forma mentis and praxis of the ancients with respect to specific environmental issues. Ancient civilizations always provided ad hoc solutions for specific emergencies, but never developed a comprehensive ecological culture of environmental protection as in modernity.
