At the beginning of the 90s, the state was placed under siege. The new law provides, among other important rules, the harsh imprisonment of the mafia, the seizure of assets and the alleviation of the penalty for collaborators of justice. The Cupola does not like this legislation. In a very long and tormented meeting of the most influential mafia bosses, they decide to take the hard line. From that moment on, a war on the state is unleashed, with no holds barred. It soon becomes a national tragedy. Cosa Nostra is about to win, it uses the corruption and complicity of politicians, policemen and "friendly" magistrates. A secret negotiation is opened between the State and the Mafia, but when they set their conditions, they are demanding and unacceptable. By now, the state is defeated and surrendered. Only a few men and women remain in the field fighting a war which, at this point, appears lost. They are part of an elite team, they are called 'Wolves' because they move in symbiosis, they follow the tracks like wild beasts thirsty for blood and meat, until they hit their prey when they don't even expect it. They are "Wolves", and as such they are considered a pack; a single and close-knit pack. This is the particular story of one of them, Superintendent Matteo Alfonsi and that of other extraordinary men and women. It is the story of the Antimafia team and the... The Ark of the Covenant has always been considered the most important object of Christianity. God ordered Moses to build it to witness His divine presence among the Israelites, thus destined to become the “People of God”. The Tablets of the Law, Aaron's staff, and a container with manna were stored in it. The track of the Ark has been lost for millennia. Many believe it is in Ethiopia, kept in the new Sancta Sanctorum of Axum, hidden from the world and shrouded in an inextricable mystery. A tremendous earthquake, with its epicenter in Axum, devastates Ethiopia, bringing destruction, death, and disease. The losses are incalculable, but the worst is yet to come. Shortly thereafter, unexplained deaths caused by an abnormal presence of radiation in the air begin to occur, which risk further decimating the already tormented population. Subsequent events will lead Santini and his team on the trail of the Ark of the Covenant to discover a fact that is now certain: the sacred artifact is out of control. Not only the Ethiopian people, but the whole of humanity could risk perishing under its terrifying destructive power.

A commando steals an ancient manuscript from the archive of the Vatican Library: a Gospel. The Church would crumble under the weight of the truth of that Gospel; for this reason, the Pope charges Tommaso Santini, the “Solver”, with the task of retrieving the manuscript at all costs. Santini will clash with a millenarian enemy of the Church, a ruthless and powerful organisation called “The Twilight”.

From Clans To Co Ops written by Theodoros Rakopoulos and has been published by Berghahn Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-01 with Social Science categories.

From Clans to Co-ops explores the social, political, and economic relations that enable the constitution of cooperatives operating on land confiscated from mafiosi in Sicily, a project that the state hails as arguably the greatest symbolic victory over the mafia in Italian history. Rakopoulos’s ethnographic focus is on access to resources, divisions of labor, ideologies of community and food, and the material changes that cooperatives bring to people’s lives in terms of kinship, work and land management. The book contributes to broader debates about cooperativism, how labor might be salvaged from market fundamentalism, and to emergent discourses about the ‘human’ economy.

The book seeks to answer questions from a wide range of academic disciplines and traces the portrait of women tied to organized crime in Italy and around the world. The book offers up accounts of mafia women, and also tales of severe abuse and violence against women.

Mafia Violence written by Monica Massari and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-08 with Social Science categories.

Using in-depth field research and analysis of case studies, Mafia Violence: Political, Symbolic, and Economic Forms of Violence in Camorra Clans focuses attention on the phenomenon of violence performed by Italian organised crime groups, devoting specific attention to the Camorra, which has been responsible since the mid-1980s for almost half of all mafia homicides documented in Italy. The Camorra has acquired increased visibility at an international level due to its intense use of violence and high level of dangerousness, but until now, the study of the different forms of violence implemented by mafias has not received systematic attention at the scientific level. Hence, this book fills this gap by providing a both theoretical and empirical contribution toward the analysis of one of the most unknown – although highly visible and dangerous – dimension of mafias’ action. This collection of work by distinguished scholars provides a unique overview of the multifaceted characteristics of violence currently performed by mafia groups in Italy by focusing on specific actors – i.e., Camorra clans – but also other traditional mafia organisations such as Cosa Nostra and ’Ndrangheta; specific contexts – i.e., different territories and different markets, both legal and illegal; and specific practices and performances. Part I takes a diachronic and comparative perspective to provide an overview of mafias’ violence during the past 30 years, focusing on the three most prominent criminal organisations active in Italy: Camorra, Cosa Nostra, and ’Ndrangheta. Based on the outcomes of a major project carried out by a research group at the University of Naples Federico II from 2015 to 2017, Part II looks at the use of violence by Camorra clans, incorporating information from case studies, judicial files, law enforcement investigations, wiretappings, interviews with privileged observers, firsthand empirical data, and historical documents and social sciences literature. Using a multi-disciplinary approach drawing from criminology, sociology, history, anthropology, economics, political science, and geography, this book is essential reading for international researchers and practitioners interested in piecing together the full picture of modern organised crime.

Over the past decade and beyond, the need for a modern anti-money-laundering strategy has become widely accepted internationally. Depriving criminal elements of the proceeds of their crimes has increasingly been seen as an important tool to combat drug trafficking and, more recently, as a critical element in fighting organized crime, corruption, and the financing of terrorism, and maintaining the integrity of financial markets. The first few financial intelligence units (FIUs) were established in the early 1990s in response to the need for countries to have a central agency to receive, analyze, and disseminate financial information to combat money laundering. Over the ensuing period, the number of FIUs has continued to increase, reaching 84 in 2003. This handbook responds to the need for information on FIUs. It provides references to the appropriate Financial ActionTask Force (FATF) standards wherever appropriate.

This volume represents the first attempt to systematically compare organised crime concepts, as well as historical and contemporary patterns and control policies in thirteen European countries. These include seven ‘old’ EU Member States, two ‘new’ members, a candidate country, and three non-EU countries. Based on a standardised research protocol, thirty-three experts from different legal and social disciplines provide insight through detailed country reports. On this basis, the editors compare organised crime patterns and policies in Europe and assess EU initiatives against organised crime.

In this long-awaited book (already a major bestseller in Italy) Ginsborg has created a fascinating, sophisticated and definitive account of how Italy has coped, or failed to cope, with the past two decades. Contemporary Italy strongly mirrors Britain - the countries have roughly the same extent, population size and GNP - and yet they are fantastically different. Ginsborg sees this difference as most fundamentally clear in the role of the family and it is the family which is at the heart of Italian politics and business. Anyone wishing to understand contemporary Italy will find it essential to have this enormously attractive and intelligent book.
