Die Bestreitung der seit Eratosthenes wissenschaftlich erwiesenen Kugelgestalt der Erde durch eine Anzahl von Theologen in der Nachfolge Diodors von Tarsus wird meist als wissenschaftshistorisches Kuriosum ohne weitreichendere Bedeutung angesehen und ist bislang nicht umfassend analysiert worden. Die altchristlichen Abweichungen vom sphärischen Weltmodell werden hier sowohl ihrer theologischen Motivation als auch ihren soziopolitischen Kontexten nach bis ins siebente Jahrhundert hinein umfassend nachgezeichnet. Die Schule Diodors erweist sich dabei als Teil einer breiteren Bewegung im syromesopotamischen Raum, welche die im AT wiedererkannte nichtsphärische Kosmographie der lokalen Tradition gegen das Modell der griechischen Wissenschaft in Stellung bringt. In der Debatte des fünften und sechsten Jahrhunderts gewinnt diese Schule Dominanz, sowohl durch die umfassende theologische Fundierung der Kosmographie (Verknüpfung mit Christologie und Eschatologie) als auch den Einfluß der Bibelkommentare besonders Theodors v. Mopsuestia. Ein Vergleich mit der westlichen Debatte zeigt jedoch, daß solche Positionen sich weder weiter entwickelt noch verbreitet hätten ohne ein im common sense des vorderen Orients verwurzeltes Substrat alternativer kosmographischer Tradition.

This volume proceeds from a workshop at the XVIII International Conference on Patristic Studies (Oxford, 2019) and presents developments in recent and ongoing research on the complex tradition of Psalter catenae. The twelve contributions cover a wide range of topics, presenting methodological developments and challenges of catena research as well as fresh insights on specific subjects, such as new manuscript finds and the publication of illustrations and captions in catena manuscripts. The studies range from the first Palestinian stages of Psalter catenae to later Byzantine compositions, and beyond: the Oriental versions receive particular attention. The volume offers students and scholars who are less familiar with research on Psalter catenae a taste of its diversity. Those who have already dealt intensively with this tradition and related topics will find useful research tools and interesting new results. Most of the volume is written in English; two contributions are in French and two in German. The printed volume is accompanied by two databases that are made available online, which allow for more complex search queries.

Ancient Greek geographical writing is represented not just by the surviving works of the well-known authors Strabo, Pausanias, and Ptolemy, but also by many other texts dating from the Archaic to the Late Antique period. This book investigates the role of the Latin language as a vehicle for science and learning from several angles. First, the question what was understood as ‘science’ through time and how it is named in different languages, especially the Classical ones, is approached. Criteria for what did pass as scientific are found that point to ‘science’ as a kind of Greek Denkstil based on pattern-finding and their unbiased checking. In a second part, a brief diachronic panorama introduces schools of thought and authors who wrote in Latin from antiquity to the present. Latin’s heydays in this function are clearly the time between the twelfth and eighteenth centuries. Some niches where it was used longer are examined and reasons sought why Latin finally lost this lead-role. A third part seeks to define the peculiar characteristics of scientific Latin using corpus linguistic approaches. As a result, several types of scientific writing can be identified. The question of how to transfer science from one linguistic medium to another is never far: Latin inherited this role from Greek and is in turn the ancestor of science done in the modern vernaculars. At the end of the study, the importance of Latin science for modern science in English becomes evident.
