This book demonstrates, in fascinating diversity, how musicians in the nineteenth century thought about and described music. The analysis of music took many forms (verbal, diagrammatic, tabular, notational, graphic), was pursued for many different purposes (educational, scholarly, theoretical, promotional) and embodied very different approaches. This, the first volume, is concerned with writing on fugue, form and questions of style in the music of Palestrina, Handel, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Wagner and presents analyses of complete works or movements by the most significant theorists and critics of the century. Die Untersuchung seines theoretischen Werks befasst sich mit Reichas „Traité de mélodie“ und seinem Periodenbegriff. Sie verfolgt die wechselseitigen Einflüsse zwischen Reicha und Beethoven, die Entwicklung seiner Lehren im Spiegel der Werke seines Schülers Berlioz sowie Reichas Interpretation durch Czerny in der erweiterten bilingualen Edition von Reichas theoretischen Schriften. Im Zentrum der Analysen von Reichas lange vernachlässigtem kompositorischen Schaffen stehen schließlich seine Fantasien, Fugen und Symphonien, sein Variationszyklus op. 57, die große Violin-Sonate, die Klaviertrios, die heute verkannten Opern sowie die Spezifik der Orchestrierung der Totenmesse. Die Beiträge zeigen die enorme Bedeutung des Komponisten und Theoretikers Reicha für die europäische Musik des 19. Jahrhunderts. Consacré à différents domaines de la personnalité d’Antoine Reicha, le présent volume, résultat du premier congrès international consacré à Reicha, délivre des éléments inédits sur sa biographie et apporte des éléments renouvelés sur son esthétique de compositeur et pédagogue. On y trouve ainsi un dépouillement des sources d’archives de la vie du compositeur à Paris assortie d’une présentation des musiciens de la Bohême en cette ville. On pourra également mesurer comment Reicha fut un médiateur entre l’Allemagne et la France et quelle fut l’originalité de son érudition musicale dans la capitale notamment en tant que transmetteur de la pensée de Rousseau. Les contributions consacrées à son Traité de mélodie et à sa théorie de la phrase musicale, à son influence sur son élève Berlioz, à l’édition bilingue de ses ouvrages théoriques par Carl Czerny, ou encore aux influences mutuelles entre Reicha et Beethoven forment un deuxième ensemble consacré à son œuvre théorique. Quant à ses compositions musicales, elles font ici l’objet d’analyses ciblées (sur ses fantaisies pour piano, ses Trente-six fugues, son cycle de Variations op. 57, sur la Grande sonate pour violon et piano, ses Trios, ses Symphonies, la Messe des morts et enfin ses opéras aujourd’hui méconnus). Cet ensemble permet de la sorte de considérer à sa juste valeur un compositeur et théoricien de la plus haute importance dans l’Europe du XIXe siècle

The successful sale and distribution of music has always depended on a physical and social infrastructure. Though the existence of that infrastructure may be clear, its organization and participants are among the least preserved and thus least understood elements of historical musical culture. Who bought music and how did those consumers know what music was available? Where was it sold and by whom? How did the consumption of music affect its composition? How was consumers' musical taste shaped and by whom?
