In 1975, after much resistance, Portugal became the last colonial power to relinquish its colonies on the African continent. The tardiness of Portuguese decolonization in Africa (Cabo Verde, Angola, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau, São Tomé e Príncipe) raises critical questions for the emergence of national literary and cultural production in the wake of national independence. Bringing together the works of poets, short story writers, and journalists, this book charts the emergence and evolution of the national literatures of Portugal’s former African colonies, from 1975 to the present. The aim of this book is to examine the ways in which writers contended with the process of decolonization, forging national, transnational, and diasporic identities through literature while grappling with the legacies and continuities of racial power structures, colonial systems of representation, and the struggles for political sovereignty and social justice. This book will be the first of its kind in English to include canonical, emerging, and previously untranslated authors of poetry and short-form fiction to a new public.

A suíço-argentina Alfonsina Storni (1892-1938) – feminista, poeta ao mesmo tempo irônica com o conformismo de homens e mulheres, frontalmente avessa ao patriarcado e celebradora do exercício pleno da sexualidade – já foi lida no Brasil, no início dos anos 1920. O primeiro a comentar os eróticos poemas de seu livro Irremediavelmente (1919) foi Monteiro Lobato, em resenha na Revista do Brasil. De um livro que continha textos que desbancavam machos, como “Homenzinho miúdo” (“homenzinho miúdo, eu te amei por meia hora, / não me peça mais.”) e outros sombriamente sensuais como “Me atreverei a lhe beijar”, um desconcertado Lobato limitou-se a elogiar sua “estranha eloquência, num luxo de imagens novas e expressões vigorosas”. Entre os argentinos, o mesmo livro, na revista cultural Nosotros, foi recebido com críticas frontais de Luis María Jordán; segundo ele, Alfonsina é um (sic) poeta que não é: “para ser lido pelas jeunes filles em longos momentos fastidiosos das tardes, mas sim por homens apaixonados e violentos que tenham mordido da vida, alguma vez, com a mesma ânsia com a qual se morde o coração de uma fruta madura”. Em 1925, nas páginas cariocas de O Jornal, Tristão de Athayde, numa resenha sobre as poetas Gabriela Mistral, Juana de Ibarbourou e Alfonsina Storni, qualifica esta última como a “menos sadia” das três. O argentino Jorge Luis Borges, no mesmo ano, na revista Proa, chegara a falar, de modo depreciativo, numa resenha sobre a poeta Nydia Lamarque, da qual hoje poucos se lembram, que ela manejava bem seu sujeito poético, “sem incorrer nem nas imprecisões nem nas gritarias de comadre que costuma nos oferecer a Storni”. Foi nesse ambiente inóspito que Alfonsina Storni construiu sua carreira, desde 1916, causando pânico nos reacionários, mordazmente ignorando as críticas e celebrando o corpo e a poesia. A despeito de tantas críticas, lançou sete livros de poemas e foi traduzida, em vida, para o francês e o italiano; fez recitais em teatros lotados e em sindicatos de lavadeiras; morreu célebre e reconhecida. Com esta antologia, sua obra retorna ao Brasil, para ser relida, em edição bilíngue, e fazer frente a preconceitos das mais diversas ordens. Que sua selva ecoe em nós. Wilson Alves-Bezerra
