L’opera di questo cantore dell’Illinois è riuscita, nel nostro paese più che in altri, a scavare nei cuori di generazioni di lettori. È forse l’attrazione costante per la morte a donare vita alla poesia di Edgar Lee Masters. Ed è attorno alla morte che si gioca l’intreccio di storie di questo canovaccio vitale e funereo al tempo stesso. In Italia il successo di questo libro, profondamente liberatorio e libertario, fu dovuto alla traduzione di Fernanda Pivano (con il supporto di Cesare Pavese) e alla vicenda che la portò in carcere proprio per aver tradotto il libro, inviso al regime fascista. Infine, ulteriore fama al libro di Lee Masters fu data dall’interpretazione di Fabrizio De André, che assieme a Nicola Piovani, diede alla luce nel 1971 un album straordinario come Non al denaro non all’amore né al cielo.
