Os dois volumes da Antologia do Folclore Brasileiro, de Luís da Câmara Cascudo, formam um painel sem similar sobre aspectos do folclore e da etnografia brasileira, através da reunião de cem textos de autores brasileiros e estrangeiros, vários deles de acesso extremamente difícil. No prefácio à obra, Cascudo explica seu objetivo: "apresentar os aspectos mais vivos do Povo brasileiro através de quatro séculos", ajustado ao conceito de folclore como "uma ciência da psicologia coletiva", com finalidade em psiquiatria, sociologia, política, religião. Os depoimentos começam quando o Brasil ainda amanhecia, narrados por viajantes estrangeiros, indo até os estudiosos brasileiros do século XX. Que viagem fabulosa! O leitor pode partilhar a surpresa de Gaspar de Carvajal, em 1541, ao assistir o combate de seus companheiros com as amazonas; acompanhar o terror de Hans Staden, prisioneiro dos índios, pronto a ser devorado; os fantasmas noturnos que apavoravam os índios, segundo o depoimento de Anchieta; a dança de guerra dos tupinambás, narrada por Jean de Léry. Nos séculos XIX e XX, com o país povoado e desenvolvido, mas asperamente pitoresco a olhos de estrangeiros, sobretudo europeus, o leitor se delicia com a malhação do Judas, testemunhada por Debret; as seduções do lundu, dança presenciada por Tollenare; Spruce ouvindo, deliciado, o canto do uirapuru. Não menos interessante, os autores brasileiros estudam lendas, crenças, superstições, pesquisam os apelidos, registram quadrinhas populares, ditados, feitiços e desafios, narram vaquejadas, analisam adivinhas, danças típicas, a alimentação do homem do povo, refletem sobre o inconsciente folclórico, numa fantástica viagem de mais de 450 anos pelo imaginário, crenças e terrores do homem brasileiro.
