MAURO MENDES DIAS Antonin Artaud nasceu em Marselha, em 1896, e morreu em Paris, em 1948. Foi um artista multifacetado: poeta, ator, escritor, dramaturgo, roteirista e diretor de teatro. Ligou-se ao surrealismo, mas rompeu com o movimento por discordar de sua adesão ao comunismo. Em 1935 Artaud conclui O teatro e seu duplo, um dos livros mais influentes do teatro desse século. Para ele, o teatro era um ritual que revelava a verdadeira realidade da alma humana e das condições em que vive. Inspirou vários diretores e grupos teatrais que buscavam renovar a linguagem cênica e questionar os valores culturais dominantes. Entre eles, podemos citar Peter Brook, Jerzy Grotowski, Eugenio Barba e o Teatro Oficina no Brasil. Sua obra tem sido estudada também por aqueles que se interessam pela relação entre arte e psicose. A vida de Artaud foi uma vida de dor, de pobreza e de loucura. Teve problemas mentais, como depressão, alucinações e delírios. Em 1937, foi internado em um hospital psiquiátrico após um surto na Irlanda. Passou os últimos onze anos de sua vida em diferentes instituições psiquiátricas, onde foi submetido a cruéis tratamentos, incluindo eletrochoques. Morreu em 1948, aos 51 anos, em Paris.
