Antropologi Budaya merupakan salah satu cabang ilmu-ilmu sosial, yang berupaya untuk memberi jawaban atas berbagai pertanyaan yang berkaitan dengan manusia dalam posisi atau kedudukannya sebagai makhluk sosial. Jawaban yang diberikan tersebut menguraikan seluk-beluk realitas fundamental tentang manusia yang dikonstruksikan sebagai intersubjektivitas atau ketentuan dunia nyata, yang merupakan dasar kebudayaan manusia. Garis besar pembahasan yang disajikan dalam buku ini dibatasi pada tiga kajian utama, yang dieksposisikan dalam beberapa bab. Pertama, orientasi umum tentang Antropologi Budaya yang tergambar dalam teori-teori yang terdapat dalam dunia Antropologi, baik berupa konsep dasar, metode-metode yang khas, hubungannya dengan ilmu lain, sejarah dan manfaat pengkajian, maupun berbagai permasalahan yang terkait dengan penerapannya. Kedua, gejala-gejala elementer atau esensial yang diamati dalam Antropologi Budaya, semisal evolusi manusia dan kebudayaannya, organisasi atau kehidupan kolektif dalam struktur masyarakat yang kemudian melahirkan pranata sosial, penelitian kepribadian, norma atau hukum, serta adat istiadat dalam budaya tertentu. Di mana hal tersebut dikaji dengan memanfaatkan pendekatan hukum serta psikologi dalam penelitian kepribadian manusia. Terakhir, merupakan kajian yang tidak kalah penting adalah mengenai perubahan kepribadian masyarakat dan budayanya. Karena pada dasarnya perubahan kebudayaan atau culture change selalu dapat terjadi, meskipun masa perubahan tersebut memakan waktu yang cukup lama, bahkan bisa ribuan tahun. Sumber penyebab perubahan tersebut bisa berasal dari dalam masyarakat itu sendiri, bisa pula berasal dari luar masyarakat yang bersangkutan. Secara umum, hal yang memengaruhi proses perubahan kebudayaan tersebut ada empat, yaitu discovery, invention, evolusi, dan difusi. Namun, pada era teknologi informasi seperti saat ini, telah banyak ditemukan perubahan budaya yang terjadi dalam masa yang relatif cepat. Hal ini biasanya karena ditemukan atau dikenalkannya teknologi baru yang semakin canggih yang dapat memicu proses perubahan kebudayaan. Semua uraian dalam buku ini merupakan kajian yang sangat penting, mengingat kita¾sebagai manusia abad ini¾akan terus dan harus mengalami proses pergeseran sikap dan mentalitas sebagai warga masyarakat untuk dapat hidup sesuai dengan tuntutan masa kini, atau yang lebih kita kenal dengan istilah modernisasi. Sementara modernisasi sendiri pasti akan selalu terkait dengan Antropologi, karena di dalamnya terdapat berbagai kajian yang memengaruhi manusia modern, seperti asal-usul, adat istiadat, norma dan hukum, kepercayaan pada masa lampau, dan sebagainya. Pemahaman atas berbagai peristiwa yang terjadi pada masa lampau dan terus mengalami perubahan tersebut, tentu saja akan memiliki manfaat yang besar bagi manusia modern yang hidup di zaman ini. Adapun informasi atau pembahasan yang disajikan dalam buku ini, pertama-tama dimaksudkan bagi mahasiswa dalam melengkapi referensi mata kuliah Pengantar Antropologi Budaya atau mata kuliah lainnya yang diarahkan untuk menumbuhkan pemahaman tentang kemanfaatan kajian Antropologi terhadap hukum. Selain itu, buku ini juga sangat bermanfaat bagi mereka yang berminat dan/atau memiliki keterkaitan dengan bidang studi ini. Misalnya, para petugas yang berurusan dengan pelaksanaan proyek-proyek pembangunan kualitas kemanusiaan, semisal bimbingan masyarakat (BIMAS) atau keamanan dan ketertiban masyarakat (KAMTIBNAS), yang notabene memiliki tugas pokok dalam menjamin kondisi keamanan, ketertiban, dan tegaknya hukum di masyarakat. Buku yang membahas kebudayaan serta kaitannya dengan hukum ini, akan memberikan gambaran yang jelas dan mampu membekali para pembacanya mengenai fungsi dan peranan hukum yang dikaji berdasarkan pendekatan Antropologi. Selanjutnya, pembaca akan menyadari betapa pentingnya mengetahui dan memahami budaya masyarakat dalam kaitannya dengan hukum positif yang berlaku dalam suatu negara.
