Che cos’è lo «Stato»? Gli approcci antropologici ed etnografici cercano di andare oltre la sua autorappresentazione come grande apparato unitario e compatto: lo «smontano» piuttosto in una molteplicità di pratiche istituzionali e quotidiane, guidate da proprie e spesso ambivalenti logiche. I saggi raccolti in questo volume, frutto di una discussione di grande intensità tra alcuni dei più significativi studiosi italiani della materia, propongono sia particolari casi di studio sia una riflessione sulle basi teoriche di un’antropologia dello Stato. Il dibattito teorico si concentra in particolare sui limiti delle posizioni «critiche» o post-coloniali che pensano lo Stato come un unico grande impianto repressivo e totalizzante. Come se in esso risiedesse la radice stessa del «male» politico, delle violenze strutturali e delle forme di disuguaglianza e oppressione che caratterizzano la società contemporanea. In campi come l’antropologia della violenza, lo studio del razzismo e delle migrazioni, l’antropologia medica e quella del patrimonio, lo Stato appare spesso come una grande forza patogena, intrinsecamente produttrice di violenza strutturale, di razzismo, di disumanizzazione. A queste teorie totalizzanti si cerca piuttosto qui di contrapporre analisi etnografiche su aspetti particolari dell’esercizio del potere statale e sui suoi rapporti con i corpi e i diritti di individui e gruppi sociali. I contesti esaminati sono sia europei che extraeuropei, e riguardano le forme dello Stato repressivo come di quello assistenziale, la gestione delle pratiche migratorie come le politiche identitarie e quelle patrimoniali.
