Auch wenn im Zuge des Iconic-Turns Historiker vermehrt auf Bildquellen zurückgriffen, so blieben die verbreitetsten Bildmedien der poströmischen Zeit, nämlich Münzen und Siegel, in Handbüchern und Studien unterrepräsentiert. Zu europäischen Herrschersiegeln dieser Zeit existiert bis heute nicht einmal ein Corpus. Dieser Band greift ebendiese Lücke auf, um die politische Kommunikation mittels Herrscherbildern auf Massenmedien der Franken im ständigen Vergleich mit denen anderer poströmischen Kulturen (Oströmer, Angelsachsen, Langobarden, Westgoten etc.) zu untersuchen und die teils höchst unterschiedlichen Entwicklungen zu erklären. Dabei wird auch vor heißdiskutierten Themen wie dem "Monetarierwesen" oder der "arabo-byzantinischen" Münzprägung nicht haltgemacht. Die so entstandene Makrohistorie bietet zukünftigen Forschenden einen guten Ausgangspunkt für weitere Studien.

Il volume, a due anni dalla chiusura dell’ultima campagna di scavo del 2021, presenta per la prima volta una lettura coordinata dei dati vecchi e nuovi emersi dalle ricerche, con metodo interdisciplinare, che associa alla presentazione dei dati di scavo, approfondimenti storici e scientifici. Il risultato che si propone è la ricostruzione della genesi e dell’evoluzione di epoca storica del sito della Piana di San Martino, del quale sono state individuate ora sei fasi, dal V alla metà del XVIII secolo, con un’eccezionale testimonianza della presenza di edificato ligneo dal VII secolo al pieno Medioevo. Da castrum tardoantico e ostrogoto, con significativi confronti con i castra d’altura, come il vicino Sant’Antonino in Perti, fondato sul limite fluido goto/bizantino, di cui restano imponenti strutture murarie difensive, residenziali e di servizio, tra cui due cisterne e manufatti significativi, vasellame ceramico di importazione, monete e pesi monetali, dopo la demolizione parziale di alcune strutture a seguito della guerra greco gotica, le evidenze archeologiche rinvenute attestano che il sito si struttura nell’altomedievale come villaggio e appena dopo il Mille come centro castrense d’altura di signori locali di tradizione longobarda, quel castrum Poncianum citato dalle fonti archivistiche dall’inizio del IX secolo. Il sito assume esclusivamente la funzione di luogo di culto e funerario dal pieno Medioevo alla scomparsa per la chiusura al culto della chiesa di San Martino, con perdita di memoria del luogo dal XVIII secolo fino alla riscoperta intorno al 1990 grazie a ricognizioni di volontari dell’Associazione Pandora di Pianello. Con le ricerche 2018-2021 si è potuto ricostruire un matrix stratigrafico ed elaborare ex novo piante di fase e di strutture, mettendo in relazione dati vecchi e nuovi, che hanno consentito per la prima volta di distinguere e di dare una lettura in estensione delle fasi di occupazione e dei contesti afferenti. Lo studio sistematico dei dati permette ora di porre il sito nel quadro delle trasformazioni storiche avvenute in un ampio torno di secoli, fin ora poco documentate per il piacentino, in un territorio, la Val Tidone, rivolto per contatti e influenze culturali verso il Piemonte, la Liguria e Piacenza e con legami evidenti con il monastero di Bobbio e coi più grandi centri urbani, quali Brescia, Pavia, Milano e con la corte di Ravenna in epoca tardoantica e altomedievale. Il sito della Piana di San Martino, dichiarato di importante interesse archeologico, insiste su un pianoro in una suggestiva cornice paesaggistica sulla cima del Monte San Martino. Fin dai primi sondaggi è emersa una complessa stratigrafia antropica attestante la presenza di due periodi discontinui di frequentazione: uno dall’età del Bronzo Finale alla seconda età del Ferro, un altro che va dall’età tardoantica fino alla metà del XVIII secolo. Le prime indagini svolte dal 2000 al 2012 sul deposito stratigrafico di epoca storica hanno portato in luce manufatti mobili notevoli e consistenti resti di mura di edifici dal tardoantico alla fine del XVIII secolo. Dal 2018 la Soprintendenza ha condotto campagne di scavo sistematiche con fondi ministeriali, su un progetto di ricerca che prevede ulteriori approfondimenti stratigrafici, rilievo 3D e rinterro dei resti già messi in luce, altrimenti a rischio di scomparsa per deterioramento a causa delle caratteristiche del luogo e delle condizioni climatiche avverse alla conservazione open air.
