Aortic aneurysms and dissections are common problems worldwide. Although surgery outcomes are improving, etiology remains elusive and absolute methods of primary prevention remain unknown. This book addresses these areas and provides future directions for clinicians and researchers who are involved in aortic disease. It reviews diagnosis and surveillance of aortic root dilation, mycotic aortic aneurysm, and the role of human immunodeficiency virus. Written by international experts, chapters discuss such topics as animal models for abdominal aortic aneurysm, safe methods of repairing type A aortic dissection, and challenges in data image analysis. This book provides a simple framework for those who want to understand the principles of aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection repair.

An aortic aneurysm should be diagnosed before it ruptures; nearly all aneurysms can be treated surgically. An aneurysm found incidentally or through screening should be monitored until it reaches a size where the benefit of a surgical repair outweighs the operational risk. The risk of rupture is small in aneurysms < 5 cm in diameter. It is easy for a primary care physician to learn the diagnosis of an abdominal aortic aneurysm with ultrasonography. The possibility of aortic dissection must be considered in a patient with severe pain suggestive of acute myocardial infarction but without clear ECG changes. A patient with a ruptured aneurysm or aortic dissection needs immediate hospitalization.

Following the first international symposium ever held in Asia on Advances in Understanding Aortic Diseases (AUAD), this volume of proceedings contains the papers presented in both the oral and poster sessions. The 8th AUAD symposium greatly contributed to the understanding of aortic diseases, especially in Asia. Aortic diseases, specifically thoracic aortic diseases, are more common in Japan than in Western countries, which adds further importance to this compilation that covers recent improvements and advances in thoracic aortic surgery and its outcomes. Divided into lectures, panel discussions, symposiums, and poster sessions, the book includes, among other topics, advances in imaging and diagnosis with 3D-CT, MRS, and US; state-of-the-art repair of the thoracic aorta; novel aspects of aortic root replacement; reconstruction; and prosthetic graft surgery. This valuable collection of work provides the reader with an increased knowledge and understanding of aortic diseases not only in Japan but worldwide.

As societies have aged and aortic diseases have become more prevalent, advances in diagnostic imaging and surgical techniques have brought significantly improved results for patients. In cardiovascular surgery, important questions remain to be addressed, however. "Strategy for Cardio-aortic and Aortic Surgery" was the theme of the 7th Keio University International Symposium for Life Sciences and Medicine. Meeting in Tokyo, researchers and specialists in cardiac surgery from around the world discussed crucial issues in their field. Papers from the symposium, collected in this volume, cover a broad range of topics, including recent advances in diagnostic imaging, brain protection during aortic surgery, spinal protection during thoracoabdominal aneurysm repair, treatment of type A acute aortic dissection, and stent-grafts and less-invasive aortic surgery. This unique book provides valuable information especially for aortic, cardiovascular, and thoracic surgeons.

This thesis addresses computation fluid dynamics modelling of aortic dissection (AD), in order to generate in silico diagnostic information and assess ‘virtual surgery’ outcomes. The thesis introduces several important advances in the modelling of aortic dissection and lays essential groundwork for further development of this technology. The work thesis represents a unique and major step forward in our understanding of AD using a patient-specific, systematic and coherent simulation approach, and is currently the most advanced work available on AD.
