"The field of counseling psychology is characterized by long roots in vocational psychology, prevention, primary interventions, advocacy, and an emphasis on individual differences. Over the years, this approach has led to emerging emphases on cultural context, dimensions of diversity, the role of work in people s lives, and expanded roles for counseling psychologists in new settings, contexts, and with new populations. This handbook will both highlight the practices in counseling psychology s traditional areas as well as in new and emerging areas. Each chapter of the APA Handbook of Counseling Psychology reflects critical counseling psychology values, focusing on resilience, strength, prevention, social justice and cultural context from new and diverse voices in the field. The two volumes synthesize and critique the state of research in different areas of counseling psychology, and go beyond the current (and past) state with an eye to the future. Authors highlight key studies that have moved each area forward, critically evaluate those studies and provide a guide to readers of what is next needed to enhance counseling psychology. This handbook will provide an irreplaceable guide to the current field of counseling psychology."--Publi.

"The chapters in this handbook encompass both traditional and emerging areas in counseling psychology. The associate editors (Linda M. Subich for Volume 1 and Jean A. Carter for Volume 2) and I had three goals for shaping the two volumes of the handbook. We first sought to ensure that we encompassed the traditional areas of counseling psychology as well as incorporating the evolution in the specialty. Second, we endeavored to capture the new and emerging areas of practice settings, populations, and perspectives. Finally, we wanted to consult with well-respected counseling psychology scholars to ensure the breadth of topics to be included in the handbook as well as the scope of the chapters and to garner suggestions for authors who could write for the handbook. Volume 1 (see record 2012-03486-000) was designed to include traditional areas that are covered in handbooks, providing a strong foundation in theories and research in counseling psychology, and Volume 2 focused on both historic and evolving applications. This second volume focuses on the applications and policy implications of the major areas of theory and research in counseling psychology. We have divided 22 chapters into five major sections: Work and Education, Community and Family, Health, Social Justice, and New Directions: Settings and Populations"--Introduction.
