Il volume analizza le verifiche necessarie quando si effettuano su edifici in muratura quelli che la normativa definisce Interventi locali, cioè degli interventi che riguardano solo una piccola parte della costruzione e non vanno a modificare la globalità dell’edificio. Per questo tipo di interventi non c’è bisogno di analisi sismica. Si riportano esempi di verifica di pareti in caso di modifica di vani oppure di apertura di nuovi vani nelle pareti portanti con calcolo della parete prima e dopo l’intervento. In interventi siffatti si dovrà verificare che la rigidezza non sia molto diversa da quella prima dell’intervento e che la resistenza non diminuisca. Sono inseriti anche esempi per il calcolo degli architravi in acciaio, per il calcolo di cerchiature di vani con telai metallici con verifica anche dei giunti saldati e la piastra di base. Anche la sostituzione di piccoli solai può rientrare negli interventi locali per cui viene anche svolto un esempio di calcolo di un piccolo solaio in acciaio e di uno in legno. Infine vengono illustrate le proprietà delle murature e i consigli della normativa sugli interventi di riparazione.

È palese affermare che tutto il territorio italiano è sismico. Come del resto è lecito confermare che la maggior parte delle strutture esistenti nel nostro Paese sono in muratura e nel 90% dei casi esse presentano problemi al contenimento delle azioni sismiche. Il presente volume nasce con l’intenzione di inserire un tassello mancante nella collana Progettazione Esecutiva di strutture in zona sismica. Viene affrontato, come in tutte le altre opere dell’autore, il corpo normativo italiano e quello degli Eurocodici con il fine di definire le principali regole sulla progettazione strutturale nuova ed esistente in muratura tradizionale. Nella pratica professionale è sempre più evidente la migrazione lavorativa edilizia verso la manutenzione straordinaria di fabbricati esistenti oltre che di interventi di recupero e di sopraelevazione di strutture esistenti. Motivo per cui, si cerca di sensibilizzare il professionista, per quanto possibile, sulla necessità di porre molta attenzione sulle verifiche di strutture in muratura esistenti. Il patrimonio edilizio italiano è divenuto vetusto. Questa caratteristica deve rendere l’intervento del tecnico molto professionale ed attento alle problematiche rivolte soprattutto alla qualità delle murature esistenti ed alle richieste di capacità sismo resistenti della nuova normativa. Il volume è suddiviso in 5 capitoli. Nel capitolo 1, Azioni sulle strutture in muratura, vengono trattate le azioni sollecitanti su strutture ricadenti nel nostro territorio Italiano. Il capitolo 2, Analisi delle norme tecniche sulle murature, raggruppa molti concetti di non facile interpretazione della normativa italiana ed in particolare si fa chiarezza sui materiali (malte, elementi resistenti in muratura e in calcestruzzo). L’attenzione è rivolta anche alle prescrizioni e ai principi dell’Eurocodice 6. Nel capitolo 3, Prescrizioni per murature in zona sismica, si considerano i principali requisiti che devono possedere le strutture in muratura in zona sismica nei confronti degli stati limite. Per quanto attiene ai criteri generali di progettazione, in questo capitolo come del resto negli altri, si vagliano anche le considerazioni della Circolare 617 del 2 febbraio 2009. Il capitolo 4 è dedicato alle Costruzioni esistenti ed in particolare alla valutazione della sicurezza nel caso di adeguamento (§ 8.4.1 NTC) e di miglioramento (8.4.2 NTC); vengono date indicazioni sull’analisi storico critica, il rilievo, la caratterizzazione meccanica ed i livelli e fattori di confidenza. Il capitolo finale, Progetti di strutture in muratura, raccoglie tre progetti recuperati dalla pratica professionale dell’autore. Jerusalem is situated in a highly seismic zone, and in the past has been the theatre of disastrous earthquakes. One of these was the 1927 quake, which seriously damaged the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre. A study of the city of Jerusalem has revealed a cyclical pattern of repeated seismic events, every 100 years or so. The desire to avert a danger, foretold in advance, lay behind the project described in this volume. In 2006 the three Major Communities of the Holy Sepulchre invited a research team from Florence University. Architects, surveyors, geologists and structural engineers conducted the investigations, in a highly interdisciplinary collaboration. It was an extraordinary opportunity to draw up a complete survey, using new technology. This resulted in a three-dimensional digital model of the structural situation on that date: a powerful, exhaustive tool for the continuation of further research, and documentation, in the future.

The principle of sustainability should be strictly connected with safety, since both aim to conserve resources: in the case of sustainability, the resources are typically thought of as environmental, while in the case of safety, the resources are basically human. In spite of this common ground, discussions on sustainability usually give insufficient attention to safety. In the last years the EU has made large investments to increase the energy efficiency of the existing building stock, paving the way for a low-carbon future; however, less effort has been made to enhance its seismic resilience. Therefore, the safety and, consequently, the sustainability of towns situated in earthquake-prone countries remain inadequate. In such countries, energy renovation actions should be combined with seismic retrofitting. However, a number of barriers considerably limit the real possibility of extensively undertaking combined retrofit actions, especially for multi-owner housing and high-rise buildings. These barriers are of different kinds: technical (e.g., unfeasibility and/or ineffectiveness of conventional retrofit solutions), financial (e.g., high renovation costs, insufficient incentives/subsidies), organizational (e.g., occupants' disruption and relocation, renovation consensus by condominium ownerships), and cultural/social (insufficient information and skills, lack of adequate policy measures for promoting renovation actions). This book aims to overcome these barriers and to bridge the gap between sustainability and safety, so to conserve both human and environmental resources.

Given the tremendous toll in human lives and attendant economic losses, it is appropriate that scientists are working hard to understand better earthquakes, with the aim of forecasting and, ultimately, predicting them. In the last decades increasing attention has been paid to the coseismic effects on the natural environment, creating a solid base of empirical data for the estimation of source parameters of strong earthquakes based on geological observations. The recently introduced INQUA scale (Environmental Seismic Intensity-ESI 2007 Scale) of macroseismic intensity clearly shows how the systematic study of earthquake surface faulting, coseismic liquefaction, tsunami deposits and other primary and secondary ground effects can be integrated with 'traditional' seismological and tectonic information to provide a better understanding of the seismicity level of an area and the associated hazards. At the moment this is the only scientific means of equating the seismic records to the seismic cycle time-spans extending the seismic catalogues even to tens of thousands of years, improving future seismic hazard analyses. This Special Publication covers some of the latest multidisciplinary work undertaken to achieve that aim. Eighteen papers from research groups from all continents address a wide range of topics related both to palaeoseismological studies and assessment of macroseismic intensity based only on the natural phenomena associated with an earthquake.
