Tujuan disusunnya buku berjudul Aplikasi Penginderaan Jauh dan Sistem Informasi Geografis untuk Pemodelan dan Pemetaan Biofisik Lahan, baik di darat maupun di perairan dangkal, adalah untuk menyediakan dasar teori akurat yang mendukung pemilihan metode penelitian dalam bidang tersebut. Semakin pesatnya perkembangan teknologi penginderaan jauh (PJ) dan sistem informasi geografis (SIG), menarik banyak pengguna dari berbagai bidang ilmu untuk memanfaatkannya. Di sisi lain, pemanfaat kedua ilmu ini tidak mudah dan tidak bisa hanya mengandalkan pengertian terhadap penggunaan perangkat lunak terkait saja. Konsep dasar mengenai pengertian apa itu PJ dan pendekatan atau metode apa yang tepat saat diintegrasikan dengan SIG harus dengan kuat mendasari aplikasi yang dipilih. Buku ini merangkum kegiatan ilmiah yang telah dilakukan oleh dosen dan mahasiswa Program Studi Kartografi dan Penginderaan Jauh angkatan 2012, di lingkungan Departemen Sains Informasi Geografi, Fakultas Geografi, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Berlokasi di Lombok, Nusa Tenggara Barat, buku ini memuat aplikasi PJ dan SIG di bidang biofisik lahan dengan cukup lengkap mencakup uplands hingga lowlands, dari pegunungan, dataran, pesisir, hingga perairan dangkal, dengan variasi data PJ dan metode SIG yang beragam pula. Proses pematangan teori, pengawasan, hingga review penyusunan proposal penelitian dilakukan selama 6 bulan sebelum keberangkatan survei lapangan, baik dari penentuan metode (pra-pemrosesan citra, metode analisis citra), satuan analisis pemetaan, persiapan alat survei, sampel lapangan, hingga analisis data dan penyajian akhir. Walaupun terdapat keterbatasan data dan waktu penelitian, namun buku ini diharapkan dapat menjadi panduan penelitian bagi mahasiswa D-3, S-1, S-2, dan referensi umum bagi mahasiswa S-3 dan peneliti umum lainnya. Perkembangan yang luar biasa cepat dalam bidang ini membuka peluang bagi siapa saja untuk memberikan masukan dan saran untuk perbaikan isi buku ini di masa mendatang. Semoga melalui bidang ilmu PJ dan SIG, kita semua dapat memberikan yang terbaik dan saling mendukung untuk kemajuan bangsa kita, Indonesia.
