Pedro I de Castilla fue un personaje histórico fascinante. Único rey castellano de ese nombre, la singularidad atraviesa buena parte de los años de su convulsa vida y es razón de una extensa historiografía petrista, además de textos y obras literarias. Su infancia estuvo marcada por la desatención que recibió de su padre, el rey Alfonso XI, que prácticamente abandonó a la reina María de Portugal para unirse a la concubina Leonor de Guzmán, con la que tuvo una prole de bastardos. Entre ellos, Enrique de Trastámara, que quitó la vida a Pedro I, en el fratricidio con que termina la guerra civil castellana. Un destacado cortesano, que conoció y participó en los acontecimientos, Pedro López de Ayala, escribió, además del Libro Rimado de Palacio, la crónica del rey don Pedro, con una relevante factura, tanto literaria como histórica, y fuente principal para el conocimiento del reinado. Las páginas de este libro se ocupan de la atractiva vida de Pedro I, con un primer acercamiento explicado por las revelaciones de los estudios de sus restos mortales y las últimas voluntades de su testamento, hecho en 1352. A la crónica de López de Ayala, y al propio cronista, que fue canciller de Castilla, se presta especial atención elaborando un atrayente análisis del tiempo y del reinado de Pedro I, en la Castilla de mediados del siglo XIV con los sucesivos y fallidos matrimonios del rey, además de su cohorte de amigas, así como su descendencia, hecha legítima en algunos casos y bastarda en bastantes otros. Las sanguinarias muertes, atribuidas a la crueldad del rey, explican la realización de un detallado memorial de las mismas. Y el regicidio, justificado como tiranicidio, que llevaría a un cambio de dinastía y, algunos años después, a la institución del Principado de Asturias. Montero Alcaide incorpora a esta magnífica obra transcripciones de indudable valor, con una final colección de apéndices que aporta un valioso conjunto de textos sobre el reinado de un monarca no solo ambivalente, con su opuesta condición justiciera y cruel, sino tocado por una singularidad fascinante.
