Mexico City’s colorful panaderías (bakeries) have long been vital neighborhood institutions. They were also crucial sites where labor, subsistence, and politics collided. From the 1880s well into the twentieth century, Basque immigrants dominated the bread trade, to the detriment of small Mexican bakers. By taking us inside the panadería, into the heart of bread strikes, and through government halls, Robert Weis reveals why authorities and organized workers supported the so-called Spanish monopoly in ways that countered the promises of law and ideology. He tells the gritty story of how class struggle and the politics of food shaped the state and the market. More than a book about bread, Bakers and Basques places food and labor at the center of the upheavals in Mexican history from independence to the aftermath of the Mexican Revolution.

A la historia de la prensa del XIX se suma este trabajo, versado y empírico, sobre el periódico " El Correo Español". El acercamiento expone datos inéditos en torno a esta publicación de la comunidad española de México: una pieza central de la prensa españolista, multicitada en los estudios sobre la prensa mexicana decimonónica, pero que, paradójicamente, ha sido poco estudiada en la historiografía nacional. En esta obra se considera el complejo panorama periodístico de la época; de igual modo, se destaca la prensa extranjera que se producía en el país, actor relevante de la vida nacional. Esta revisión constituye un investigación original sobre la fundación y los primeros diez años de edición del periódico "El Correo Español", que refiere a la etapa en la que Fernando Luis Juliet de Elizalde lo fundó y dirigió (1889-1898). En el texto se entrelazan valiosos datos biográficos que permiten reconstruir las motivaciones, interrelaciones y redes periodísticas en las que participó el editor, las cuales establecieron un aporte a la prensa periódica comprometida en la elaboración de este diario, y otros, representativos de un sector de los españoles en México.

Las experiencias migratorias de los españoles en la Ciudad de México en el primer tercio del siglo xx son analizadas en este libro desde un enfoque novedoso en los estudios históricos sobre la inmigración española en México, teniendo en cuenta el análisis de los problemas de inserción social y laboral de los trabajadores asalariados y sus familias en un tiempo conflictivo de la historia del país. Se abordan también las distintas alternativas que los inmigrantes adoptaron frente a las dificultades y especialmente la vía del retorno a través de la repatriación asistida por el Estado español. Jóvenes recién llegados, hombres y mujeres que llevaban ya varios años expatriados, incluso ancianos, desfilan por las páginas de esta investigación como dependientes, amas de casa, empleados del comercio, la industria y los servicios, que eran las principales actividades de los españoles en la capital mexicana. Otros carecían de empleo alguno. Todos ellos vieron cómo sus modos de vida, sus proyectos migratorios, se desbarataban en tiempos de la Revolución o en las crisis económicas que sacudieron al país con posterioridad. Muchos optaron por dirigirse a sus representantes consulares y tramitar un pasaje gratuito con la ayuda de asociaciones como la Sociedad de Beneficencia Española de México. En estas circunstancias, el tejido social de la inmigración jugó un papel esencial en la búsqueda de soluciones.
