Chapters: Ad Gentes, Apostolicam Actuositatem, Christus Dominus, Decretum de Judaeis, Dei Verbum, Dignitatis Humanae, Gaudet Mater Ecclesia, Gaudium et Spes, Gravissimum Educationis, Inter Mirifica, Lumen Gentium, Nostra Aetate, Optatam Totius, Orientalium Ecclesiarum, Perfectae Caritatis, Presbyterorum Ordinis, Sacrosanctum Concilium, Unitatis Redintegratio. Excerpt: Decretum de Judaeis is the name given to the series of draft documents of the Second Vatican Council which led to ground-breaking progress in the Church's relations with Jews. Because they are not featured prominently within Nostra Aetate itself, with only 25% of content dedicated to Jews, they are not to be confused with the official conciliar statements themselves. Approximately fourteen months after Cardinal Bea was commissioned by Pope John XXIII the first draft, entitled "Decree on the Jews" ("Decretum de Judaeis") was completed, that is, in November 1961. This draft essentially went nowhere, never having been submitted to the Council, which opened on 11 October 1962. It read: The Church, the Bride of Christ, acknowledges with a heart full of gratitude that, according to God's mysterious saving design, the beginnings of her faith and election go as far back as to the Israel of the Patriarchs and Prophets. Thus she acknowledges that all Christian believers, children of Abraham by faith (see Gal 3:7), are included in his call. Similarly, her salvation is prefigured in the deliverance of the Chosen People out of Egypt, as in a sacramental sign (Liturgy of the Easter Vigil). And the Church, a new creation in Christ (see Eph 2:15), can never forget that she is the spiritual continuation of the people with whom, in His mercy and gracious condescension, God made the Old Covenant. The Church, in fact, believes that Christ, who "is our peace," embraces Jews and...

Vatican Ii A Very Short Introduction written by Shaun Blanchard and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-02-21 with Religion categories.

Very Short Introductions: Brilliant, Sharp, Inspiring The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), or Vatican II, is arguably the most significant event in the life of the Catholic Church since the Reformation. The Council initiated, intentionally or not, profound changes not simply within Catholic theology, but in the religious, social, and moral lives of the world's billion Catholics. It also reconfigured, intellectually and practically, the Church's engagements with those outside of it - most obviously with regard to other religions. The sixteen documents formally issued by Vatican II constitute some of the most influential writings of the whole twentieth century. Debates over their correct interpretation and authority are constant, but they remain an indispensable point-of-reference for all areas of Catholic life, from liturgy and sacraments, to the Church's vast network of charitable and educational endeavours the world over. In this Very Short Introduction, Shaun Blanchard and Stephen Bullivant present the backstory to this event. Vatican II is explored in light of the wider history of the Catholic Church and placed in the tumultuous context of the 1960s. It distils the research on Vatican II, employing the first-hand accounts of participants and observers, and the official proceedings of the Council to paint a rich picture of one of the most important events of the last century. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

2020 Catholic Press Association first place award, theology--theological and philosophical studies This book is unique in the literature about Vatican II. From the manifold issues debated at the council and formulated in its sixteen documents, Ormond Rush proposes that the salient features of “the vision of Vatican II” can be captured in twenty-four principles. He concludes by proposing that these principles can function as criteria for assessing the reception of the conciliar vision over the last five decades and into the future. There is no other book that attempts such a comprehensive synthesis of the council’s vision for renewal and reform of the Catholic Church.

I have received so many blessings in my life (the gift of faith, a long life, good health, an excellent education, many opportunities to serve others, two happy marriages with two outstanding wives, wonderful children and grandchildren, a successful career, prosperity, inspiring friends, opportunities to travel, and too many other gifts to list) that I thought I should celebrate them and share them with others in this book as I have done to a lesser extent in an earlier memoir entitled Close Calls, the Worlds First Unauthorized Autobiography. Reviewing my life I see the hand of God in everything that has happened to me and that I have done. Most important of all studying in Rome enhanced my love of the Church and my desire to stay close to it and follow its teachings and rules. The recent shocking increase in violence and unheard of forms of cruelty in the world have me praying many times each day. The title O Roma Nobilis comes from two lines of a hymn which is sung on the feast of Saints Peter and Paul (June 29). They read O Roma nobilis, quae duorum principum es consecrata glorioso sanguine. O noble Rome, you have been consecrated with the glorious blood of two princes.

The sixteen official documents—constitutions, decrees, and declarations—of the Second Vatican Council are now available from Liturgical Press in the most popular and widely used inclusive-language edition translated by Irish Dominican Austin Flannery (+October 21, 2008). As the worldwide Church continues to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Council (1962–65), there is a great need in college classrooms and parish faith formation groups—as well as for individuals—to again have access to these documents in contemporary English. As Flannery wrote in his introduction to the 1996 edition, “The translation of the texts of the Vatican documents in the present volume differs from that in the previous publication in two respects. It has been very considerably revised and, in place, corrected. It is also, to a very large extent, in inclusive language. “I say ‘to a very large extent,’ because we have used inclusive language in passages about men and women but not, however, in passages about God, except where the use of the masculine pronoun was easily avoidable.”
