The Highland Summer Writing Conference (HSC), held each summer along the banks of the ancient New River at Radford University's Selu Conservancy, brings together and inspires writers as they participate in the communal art of creating and sharing. Over the years, many prestigious Appalachian authors have taught workshops to like-minded students, many of whom became published authors in their own right. This book, a celebration of the HSC, is a collection of reflective essays, poetry, fiction, and non-fiction contributed by 41 authors and student-authors who have taken part in the conference over a span of 43 years.

"Lingering questions and stereotypes continue to surround Appalachia; even the exact location and size of the region are still debated. It is not surprising, then, that the very concept of Appalachian culture is also contentious. Some see the individuals who reside there as noble northern-European descendants whose lifestyle is reminiscent of the colonial era. There are others who view the region as a land of backward mountain people who are uneducated and hostile. One of the best methods to understand the area is through literature. Although conflict is still readily apparent, stories, memoirs, and poetry from Appalachian authors illuminate the lifestyles, history, and contradictions that define Appalachia. In Writing Appalachia, editors Katherine Ledford and Theresa Lloyd have compiled a comprehensive collection of fictional and non-fictional pieces that represent the region and discuss topics such as Native American residents, slavery and the Civil War, settlement schools, Appalachian folklore and modernism in the region. Featuring writers who were born in the region, adopted the region, or wrote about a significant experience in the region, the anthology includes pieces by Barbara Kingsolver, Silas House, Frank X Walker, James Still, and Tom Wolfe among others. The people living in this region epitomize the deep connection between humans and nature as is illustrated in the sections on southern mountaineers and folklore. However, the relationship between people and the land is being threatened by the increase in mining and mountaintop removal in the region, making the importance of local farming and environmental activism especially salient. Through the featured pieces, a picture of Appalachia emerges that shows that the many conflicts within the region subsist because they are all true- Appalachia is defined by its contradictions. This is the first comprehensive anthology of Appalachian literature to include racial minorities, women, and the Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual (Transgendered community. In addition, Ledford and Lloyd analyze the more modern works that reveal the vast changes the region has undergone"--

The last quarter-century has seen a remarkable outpouring of fiction and poetry from southern Appalachia-a surge of creativity that has formed an integral part of a larger, and still growing, regional self-consciousness. This book charts the course of this literary renaissance through twenty-one interviews with contemporary Appalachian writers, conversations conducted between 1983 and 2003 at Emory & Henry College's annual literary festival and originally printed in the Iron Mountain Review. The authors interviewed range from nationally known figures such as Fred Chappell, Robert Morgan, Lee Smith, Mary Lee Settle, and Charles Wright to less prominent, though no less gifted, writers like George Ella Lyon, Jo Carson, and George Scarborough. Many of the interviewers are themselves creative writers or Appalachian studies scholars, as well as longtime friends of the interviewees. For example, Jim Wayne Miller interviews James Still; Loyal Jones interviews Jim Wayne Miller; Richard Marius interviews Wilma Dykeman; George Garrett interviews David Huddle; and Michael Chitwood interviews Michael McFee. These wide-ranging conversations address such topics as formative experiences in the author's childhood, major literary influences, the author's educational background and mentors, the writing process, the limitations imposed by such labels as “Appalachian writer,” and the broadening scope of literature originating in the Appalachian region. Collectively, these interviews confirm the judgment of some observers that writers from the mountain South are now playing a much larger role in southern letters than in previous periods, thus constituting a “renaissance within a renaissance.”

“A broad sampling of deeply impressive writings—essays, memoirs, poetry, letters, stories—by women from the Southern Highlands.” —Kirkus Reviews Winner of the 1997 Appalachian Studies Award Appalachian Writers Association 1999 Book of the Year Winner of the Susan Koppleman Award of the Popular Culture Association for Best Edited Collection in Women’s Studies Thirty-five women writers from Appalachia define the region in a larger, more generous, and more intricate way that it has been defined before, dispelling many demeaning stereotypes of the region. The writers tell their compelling stories with poignancy, eloquence, forthrightness, and humor. A new American literary renaissance is ablaze in the Southern Highlands—the very place so often depicted by outsiders as dimly lit. 35 photos. “Dyer succeeds admirably in a dual purpose: to promote a vital and virtually unknown body of work, and to suggest an Appalachian spirit that transcends state borders and artistic genres.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) “From the well-known, like Dykeman, Sharyn McCrumb and Denise Giardina, to the lesser known, these essayists, in one way or another, write of what it means to come to fully appreciate one’s native tongue; to be inspired by the courage and fortitude of their Appalachian foremothers; and to glory in their profound attachment to the natural beauty of the Appalachian hills, hollers and trails.” —Bowling Green Daily News “The writers here represent some of the most unique and often unsung talent in literature. These essays will carry you to a far mountain place and whet your appetite for more.” —Magazine (Baton Rouge, LA)
