This book traces the various configurations of food as hunger, desire, and appetite which point to the complex dialectic of consumption and consummation of ideas and forms underpinning the arts. It examines the relationship between nature and science, space and the act of artistic creation, desire and the arts, appetite and hunger. One of the aims of the book is to explore established theoretical and historical conceptions of “nature” in the arts and re-think their relationship to appetite in the globalized world. Examining the many guises and figurations of hunger in literature and the arts, this book gives an overview of the themes that emerge from the idea of the Hunger Artist alongside the fact of food: the latter’s significance as a barometer of social class; its rich source as a metaphor in literature and art; its unequal distribution throughout the world; and the means by which its consumption can lead to gluttony and further exploitation of the “hungry.” One of the great strengths of this book is the trans-disciplinary nature of the contributions achieved by mapping how the arts in their representation of social, psychological, political, and philosophical perspectives draw attention to the problems associated with excessive human cravings.

" Food has always been an important source of knowledge about culture and society. Art and Appetite takes a fascinating new look at depictions of food in American art, demonstrating that the artists' representations of edibles offer thoughtful reflection on the cultural, political, economic, and social moments in which they were created. Using food as an emblem, artists were able to both celebrate and critique their society, expressing ideas relating to politics, race, class, gender, and commerce. Focusing on the late 18th century through the Pop artists of the 20th century, this lively publication investigates the many meanings and interpretations of eating in America. Richly illustrated, Art and Appetite features still life and trompe l'oeil painting, sculpture, and other works by such celebrated artists as William Merritt Chase, John Singleton Copley, Elizabeth Paxton, Norman Bel Geddes, Stuart Davis, Edward Hopper, Alice Neel, Wayne Thiebaud, Roy Lichtenstein, and many more. Essays by leading experts address topics including the horticultural and botanical underpinnings of still-life paintings, the history of alcohol consumption in the United States, Thanksgiving, and food in the world of Pop art. In addition to the images and essays, this book includes a selection of 18th- and 19th-century recipes for all-American dishes including molasses cake, stewed terrapin, rice blancmange, and roast calf's head. On the disconnect between the colonial impulse to collect, consume, and commodify ecologies and the violent realities of the colonial experience. “Orchidelirium,” the orchid madness that gripped Europe over a century ago, is still alive and well. The Estonian presentation at the 59th Venice Biennale utilizes this moniker to highlight the disjuncture between the colonial impulse to collect, consume, and commodify ecologies and the violent realities of the colonial experiences in both Estonia and Indonesia. Using the power of art, visual cultures, and research, this project represents a conscious untangling of patriarchal, neocolonial visual vocabulary and attending structures, as new voices emerge, creating space for reflection and tools for understanding botanical lives. This collaborative project between artists Kristina Norman and Bita Razavi working in close dialogue with curator Corina L. Apostol has been invited to take place in the Dutch Rietveld Pavilion. Orchidelirium is in conversation with the presentation inside the pavilion, encompassing installations, films, photography, and performance connecting the past with the present, all through the lens of colonial botany and its socio-political ramifications. As such, it gives heightened awareness of the power of choices artists past and present can make to use visibility which has been afforded on an international stage, and how to talk about privilege. Orchidelirium expands on the topical discussions taking place today on colonial and neocolonial frameworks that are still with us, and as an extension, what forms art can take to challenge power structures rather than represent or describe them. The book is made up of several intertwining contributions: dialogues with Norman and Razavi analyze the works of contemporary artists working at the intersection of art, botany, science, and decolonial methods, while a timeline, commissioned essays, and a glossary of terms offer accessible viewpoints into the complex and multifaceted issues that inform and are raised by the art projects. The autonomous but interrelated contributions and dialogues, which either speak directly to the art projects by Norman and Razavi or follow lines of inquiry along with them, cover prospects from decolonial cultural studies, art criticism and art history, natural history, economic botany, critical race studies, and ecofeminism along with them.

A Hunger For Aesthetics written by Michael Kelly and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-05-15 with Philosophy categories.

For decades, aesthetics has been subjected to a variety of critiques, often concerning its treatment of beauty or the autonomy of art. Collectively, these complaints have generated an anti-aesthetic stance prevalent in the contemporary art world. Yet if we examine the motivations for these critiques, Michael Kelly argues, we find theorists and artists hungering for a new kind of aesthetics, one better calibrated to contemporary art and its moral and political demands. Following an analysis of the work of Stanley Cavell, Arthur Danto, Umberto Eco, Susan Sontag, and other philosophers of the 1960s who made aesthetics more responsive to contemporary art, Kelly considers Sontag's aesthetics in greater detail. In On Photography (1977), she argues that a photograph of a person who is suffering only aestheticizes the suffering for the viewer's pleasure, yet she insists in Regarding the Pain of Others (2003) that such a photograph can have a sustainable moral-political effect precisely because of its aesthetics. Kelly considers this dramatic change to be symptomatic of a cultural shift in our understanding of aesthetics, ethics, and politics. He discusses these issues in connection with Gerhard Richter's and Doris Salcedo's art, chosen because it is often identified with the anti-aesthetic, even though it is clearly aesthetic. Focusing first on Richter's Baader-Meinhof series, Kelly concludes with Salcedo's enactments of suffering caused by social injustice. Throughout A Hunger for Aesthetics, he reveals the place of critique in contemporary art, which, if we understand aesthetics as critique, confirms that it is integral to art. Meeting the demand for aesthetics voiced by many who participate in art, Kelly advocates for a critical aesthetics that confirms the power of art.
