Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, , course: Construction managment, language: English, abstract: Construction is considered to be a high waste generating industry, in spite of its importance for human lives and economies. A lot of researches have been conducted to find out new ways to improve the way construction projects are managed. The main goals of these researches were to reduce the cost and time for projects as well as increase the quality of the final product. In 1990’s Lean Construction concept has been founded as an alternative for the conventional construction project management methodologies, based on Lean manufacturing concepts focusing on value and reducing waste in the construction processes. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a modern tool enabling intelligent model based process. BIM implementation has a lot of benefits to the construction, for instance, making use of visualization of the final product to facilitate communication between different disciplines and team members, enable what-if analysis and analyze the constructability of a building. During the last decade, Pioneering contractors in US have realized the synergic fit between Lean and BIM. The interaction between Lean Construction and BIM has been the topic of many researches since then. This research introduces the term “LeanBIM”, which refers to the combination of the tools of Lean and BIM, and discuss their effects on sustainability and resource efficiency. An extensive review of literature is carried out and a survey is conducted on the Lean and BIM professionals and researchers from all over the world. The results showed the positive effect of LeanBIM implementation on sustainability of building as well as resource efficiency. LeanBIM is also expected to reduce the overall cost and time required for construction, and increase the quality. The results also showed that there is shortage in Lean/BIM professionals, lack of legal framework to enable the collaboration between all parties, lack of awareness of LeanBIM benefits. It is observed from the result that a considerable investment is required to form an IT infrastructure capable of implementing LeanBIM. Keywords: Lean Construction, Building Information Modeling, Sustainability, LeanBIM, Resource efficiency, Construction Project Management.

This open access book describes a BIM-based toolkit that has been developed according to the latest research activities on building information modelling and semantic interoperability to optimize the building process. It highlights the impacts of using such new tools to fast renovation activities starting from the decision-making and design stages to the construction site management with the possibility to monitor occupants' and owners’ feedback during the realization process. In this process, a framework has been developed and implemented to allow stakeholders involved in a renovation project to efficiently compile, maintain, and add data about (i) building elements, (ii) building services systems, (iii) tenants, operators, and owners of the building, and (iv) current and predicted performance of the building from the various data sources available. The framework applies and specializes the existing practices in the Semantic Web, Linked Data, and ontology domain to the management of renovation projects. It has been designed to be open so that any system which implements the required functions and uses the specified conventions will be able to achieve semantic interoperability with other framework-compliant systems in the renovation domain. Finally, this book represents the validation process of the toolkit that has been held in three demo sites: a social housing building in Italy and two private residential buildings in Poland and Finland. The outcome shows that the toolkit facilitates the renovation process with relevant reductions of time, costs, and energy consumption and that the inhabitants can take advantage of the increase in building performances, quality, and comfort.

A sustainable building is constructed of materials that could decrease environmental impacts, such as energy usage, during the life-cycle of the building. Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been identified as an effective tool for the virtual analysis of a building's performance in the design stage to determine the designs that have the largest impact on the building's performance. The main aim of this study was to assess the applicability of BIM in analyzing and reducing the energy consumption of buildings. In the design and pre-construction stages, the building information model (BIM) should be taken into account as a comprehensive simulation method that can be used to create opportunities to assess and improve the performances of buildings. This integration of the BIM concept into the design stage can be used to select the best green building designs and reduce the need for later design modifications that require extra time and cost. The results of the study will be useful to architects and building designers as they use the BIM concept and tools to develop energy-efficient buildings in the future with the goal of achieving sustainable development for society.

This study aims at determining the influence of BIM adoption drivers on attaining sustainable construction in Nigeria, with a view to fostering the adoption of BIM through the use of these drivers by the necessary authorities. Exploratory and survey research design approach was used for the study. 191 copies of structured questionnaire were administered on the respondents using random sampling method on the construction professionals in Akwa Ibom State, South-South, Nigeria. The research instrument's validity test was done by experts in the department of building, University of Uyo; and a reliability test was carried out on the collected data using Cronbach's alpha. The perceptions of the professionals on the adoption strategies were analysed using relative importance index (R.I.I) method; while the test on the impact of the strategies on sustainable buildings was done using multiple regression analysis. The professionals agreed that the most important strategies that will enhance the adoption of BIM for sustainable building projects in the study area, are organising professional workshops and training for stakeholders, the availability of well-trained professionals, and making the software packages affordable; from the multiple regression analysis, it was found that the strategies have a positive impact on attaining sustainable construction. The coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.995 while the adjusted R2 was 0.995 showing that 99.5% of the variation in achieving sustainable building projects in the study area was explained by combined changes in the predicting variables (Advanced Man-Power and Public Sector Led Strategies). The analysis also showed that the overall fit of the regression model was good given the ANOVA F-value of 13869.627 and significant at 0.05 critical level. The Durbin Watson showed 1.766, which was an indication that there was an autocorrelation among the successive values of the variables in the model since the value was greater than one. The study therefore establishes that in order to implement BIM for sustainable building projects, the use of advanced man-power training and the role of the public sector must be strongly adhered to.
