A computer network is defined as a digital telecommunications network in which computing devices share resources using data links between nodes. Data links can be established over cable media or wireless media. Computer networks support a number of services and applications, such as digital audio, digital video and access to the World Wide Web. In a computer network, data is transmitted or received in the form of packets between nodes. Local Area Network, Wide Area Network and Metropolitan Area Network are the three main types of networks. The chief components of computer networks are servers, transmission media, clients, network interface card, network operating system, etc. A communication system is a collection of communication networks, relay stations, transmission systems, tributary stations, and data terminal equipment that are able to interoperate and interconnect. Communication systems can be of different types, depending on the type of media and technology used, and application area, such as optical communication system, radio communication system, tactical communications system, etc. This book discusses the fundamentals as well as modern approaches of computer networking. Also included in it is a detailed explanation of the various concepts and applications of communication systems. This book on computer networking and communication systems is a collective contribution of a renowned group of international experts.

Computer communications is one of the most rapidly developing technologies and it is a subject with which everyone in the computer systems profession should be familiar. Computer communications and networks is an introduction to communications technology and system design for practising and aspiring computer professionals. The subject is described from the computer system designer's point of view rather than from the communications engineer's viewpoint. The presentation is suitable for introductory reading as well as for reference. The emphasis is on practical, rather than theoretical, aspects and on technology which will become more important in the future. The majority of the subject matter applies to civil and military communications but some aspects which are unique to military applications have been included where considered signifi cant. Computer communications is a rapidly changing and highly complex subject. Sufficient practical knowledge of the subject is not usually gained at university or college but is generally developed over a period of several years by trial and error, attending courses, reading reference books and journals; this book attempts to simplify and speed up the process by bringing together a body of information which is otherwise distributed throughout many books and journals. The information is presented in a framework which makes a wider understanding of the subject possible. Basic knowledge of communications is assumed, a general famil iarity with computer systems is anticipated in later chapters, and, where relevant, theory is explained.

The subject of computer communications is changing very rapidly. Improvements in terminal access, aligned with the development of timesharing, has brought hands-on experience to a large number of non specialist users. Computer networks have made available vast computing resources and data banks to these users. This book is for anyone familiar with using computers who wishes to understand the techniques used in computer communications. It is also an introduction to the architecture of present day computer communication systems. I would like to thank Roland lbbett, Steve Treadwell, Peter Kirstein and Del Thomas for their invaluable advice and encouragement. My thanks also to Malcolm Stewart and the staff at Macmillan. The late Gareth Pugh encouraged my interest in computer communications and provided the opportunity to develop the material for this book. The text was formatted on a UNIX computer system: I am grateful to Professor Kirstein for permission to use this system. I am indebted to NEC Telecommunications Europe for the use of a spinwriter printer on which the master copy was produced. Finally, no amount of words can express my debt to Jo this project and Rosemary for patiently bearing with over the last three years.

E-based systems and computer networks are becoming standard practice across all sectors, including health, engineering, business, education, security, and citizen interaction with local and national government. They facilitate rapid and easy dissemination of information and data to assist service providers and end-users, offering existing and newly engineered services, products, and communication channels. Recent years have witnessed rising interest in these computerized systems and procedures, which exploit different forms of electronic media to offer effective and sophisticated solutions to a wide range of real-world applications. With contributions from researchers and practitioners from around the world, this two-volume book discusses and reports on new and important developments in the field of e-systems, covering a wide range of current issues in the design, engineering, and adoption of e-systems. E-Systems for the 21st Century: Concept, Developments and Applications focuses on the use of e-systems in many areas of sectors of contemporary life, including commerce and business, learning and education, health care, government and law, voting, and service businesses. The two-volume book offers comprehensive research and case studies addressing e-system use in health, business, education, security, and citizen interaction with local and national government. Several studies address the use of social networks in providing services as well as issues in maintenance and security of e-systems as well. This collection will be valuable to researchers at universities and other institutions working in these fields, practitioners in the research and development departments in industry, and students conducting research in the areas of e-systems. The book can be used as an advanced reference for a course taught at the undergraduate and graduate-level in business and engineering schools as well.

This book presents revised versions of tutorial lectures given at the IEEE/CS Symposium on modeling, analysis, and simulation of computer and telecommunication systems held in Orlando, FL, USA in October 2003. The lectures are grouped into three parts on performance and QoS of modern wired and wireless networks, current advances in performance modeling and simulation, and other specific applications of these methodologies. This tutorial book is targeted to both practitioners and researchers. The practitioner will benefit from numerous pointers to performance and QoS issues; the pedagogical style and plenty of references will be of great use in solving practical problems. The researcher and advanced student are offered a representative set of topics not only for their research value but also for their novelty and use in identifying areas of active research.

Whether or not you use a computer, you probably use a telephone, electric power, and a bank. Although you may not be aware of their presence, networked computer systems are increasingly becoming an integral part of your daily life. Yet, if such systems perform poorly or don't work at all, then they can put life, liberty, and property at tremendous risk. Is the trust that we--as individuals and as a society--are placing in networked computer systems justified? And if it isn't, what can we do to make such systems more trustworthy? This book provides an assessment of the current state of the art procedures for building trustworthy networked information systems. It proposes directions for research in computer and network security, software technology, and system architecture. In addition, the book assesses current technical and market trends in order to better inform public policy as to where progress is likely and where incentives could help. Trust in Cyberspace offers insights into: --The strengths and vulnerabilities of the telephone network and Internet, the two likely building blocks of any networked information system. --The interplay between various dimensions of trustworthiness: environmental disruption, operator error, "buggy" software, and hostile attack. --The implications for trustworthiness of anticipated developments in hardware and software technology, including the consequences of mobile code. --The shifts in security technology and research resulting from replacing centralized mainframes with networks of computers. --The heightened concern for integrity and availability where once only secrecy mattered. --The way in which federal research funding levels and practices have affected the evolution and current state of the science and technology base in this area. You will want to read this book if your life is touched in any way by computers or telecommunications. But then, whose life isn't?
