Advanced flight control system design, analysis, and testing methodologies developed at the Ames Research Center are applied in an analytical and flight test evaluation of the Advanced Digital Optical Control System (ADOCS) demonstrator. The primary objectives are to describe the knowledge gained about the implications of digital flight control system design for rotorcraft, and to illustrate the analysis of the resulting handling-qualities in the context of the proposed new handling-qualities specification for rotorcraft. Topics covered in-depth are digital flight control design and analysis methods, flight testing techniques, ADOCS handling-qualities evaluation results, and correlation of flight test results with analytical models and the proposed handling-qualities specification. The evaluation of the ADOCS demonstrator indicates desirable response characteristics based on equivalent damping and frequency, but undersirably large effective time-delays (exceeding 240 m sec in all axes). Piloted handling-qualities are found to be desirable or adequate for all low, medium, and high pilot gain tasks; but handling-qualities are inadequate for ultra-high gain tasks such as slope and running landings. Advanced flight control system design, analysis, and testing methods are applied in an analytical and flight test evaluation of the Advanced Digital Optical Control System (ADOCS) demonstrator. This paper describes the knowledge gained about the implications of digital flight control system design for rotorcraft, and illustrates. The analysis of the resulting handling-qualities in the context of the proposed new handling-qualities specification for rotorcraft. Topics included are digital flight control design and analysis methods, flight testing techniques, ADOCS handling-qualities evaluation results, and correlation of flight test results with analytical models and the proposed handling- qualities specification. Evaluation of the ADOCS demonstrator indicated desirable response characteristics based on equivalent damping and frequency, but undesirably large effective time-delays. Piloted handling-qualities are desirable or adequate for all low, medium, and high pilot gain tasks; but handling-qualities are inadequate for ultra-high gain tasks such as slope and running landings. Correlation of these results with the proposed handling- qualities specification indicates good agreement for the bandwidth boundaries, but suggests the need for more stringent limits on allowable phase-delay. Analytical models based on emulation (s-plane) techniques compare favorably with flight extracted frequency-domain characteristics of the overall (end-to-end) ADOCS responses. Direct digital analysis procedures are necessary to characterize the intersample behavior of the actuator rate response.

Annotation Bridging the gap between academic research and real-world applications, this reference on modern flight control methods for fixed-wing aircraft deals with fundamentals of flight control systems design, then concentrates on applications based on the modern control methods used in the latest aircraft. The book is written for practicing engineers who are new to the aviation industry, postgraduate students in strategic or applied research, and advanced undergraduates. Some knowledge of classical control is assumed. Pratt is a member of IEEE and is UK Member for AIAA's Technical Committee on Guidance, Navigation and Control. Annotation c. Proposed concepts for the next generation of combat (scout/attack) helicopters are to be embodied in a complex, highly maneuverable, multiroled vehicle with avionics systems which are as important to mission success as the airframe itself. Single pilot and nap-of-the-Earth operations require handling qualities which minimize the involvement of the pilot in basic stabilization tasks. To meet these requirements will demand a full authority, high-gain, multimode, multiply-redundant, digital flight-control system. The gap between these requirements and current low-authority, low-bandwidth operational rotorcraft flight-control technology is considerable. this research aims at smoothing the transition between current technology and advanced concept requirements. The report: (a) extensively reviews the state of the art of high-bandwidth digital flight-control systems; (b) illustrates the important concepts in design and analysis of high-gain, digital systems with a detailed case study involving a current rotorcraft system. Frequency-domain methods for design and analysis are stressed in this report as essential for the practical implementation of high-gain control systems for rotorcraft. Approximate and exact methods are explained and illustrated for treating the important concerns which are unique to digital systems. Proposed specifications and flight-test data concerning the handling qualities of scout/attack rotorcraft imply restrictions on the maximum effective time delay which must be carefully considered in the design process.

This book provides a single comprehensive resource that reviews many of the current aircraft flight control programmes from the perspective of experienced practitioners directly involved in the projects. Each chapter discusses a specific aircraft flight programme covering the control system design considerations, control law architecture, simulation and analysis, flight test optimization and handling qualities evaluations. The programmes described have widely exploited modern interdisciplinary tools and techniques and the discussions include extensive flight test results. Many important `lessons learned' are included from the experience gained when design methods and requirements were tested and optimized in actual flight demonstration.

Advanced Control of Aircraft, Spacecraft and Rockets introduces the reader to the concepts of modern control theory applied to the design and analysis of general flight control systems in a concise and mathematically rigorous style. It presents a comprehensive treatment of both atmospheric and space flight control systems including aircraft, rockets (missiles and launch vehicles), entry vehicles and spacecraft (both orbital and attitude control). The broad coverage of topics emphasizes the synergies among the various flight control systems and attempts to show their evolution from the same set of physical principles as well as their design and analysis by similar mathematical tools. In addition, this book presents state-of-art control system design methods - including multivariable, optimal, robust, digital and nonlinear strategies - as applied to modern flight control systems. Advanced Control of Aircraft, Spacecraft and Rockets features worked examples and problems at the end of each chapter as well as a number of MATLAB / Simulink examples housed on an accompanying website at http://home.iitk.ac.in/~ashtew that are realistic and representative of the state-of-the-art in flight control.
