Excerpt from Applied Electricity for Practical Men This volume has been in the process of making during twenty years' experience in teaching Applied Electricity to practical electrical workers; to men who expect to make direct application of the principles given them in the class room to their daily work with commercial circuits and machinery. It is written wholly from the standpoint of the one who puts up and operates electric circuits and apparatus. It does not touch problems of apparatus design. Pure theory is avoided, except as it has direct bearing upon practical matters. The principles stated and the explana tions of apparatus which are ofiered are only such as are necessary in order to present essential elements. They can be elaborated by the instructor as much as he may see fit. Every teacher understands the importance of numerical prob lems in order to make clear the principles and performance of apparatus. It is with this in mind that the set of problems found at the end of each chapter has been made up. Even though the computations demanded in the solution of many of the problems of this book are not required in everyday practical work, it is important to understand how a thing works; and unless one can make a computation regarding it and figure out a numerical result, no clear conceptions have been secured. Excerpt from Practical Applied Electricity: A Book in Plain English for the Practical Man, Theory, Practical Applications and Examples This book is intended primarily for those persons who are desirous of obtaining a practical knowledge of the subject of Electricity, but are unable to take a complete course in Electrical Engineering. It is the opinion of the author that such persons should have a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles of the subject, in order that they may easily understand the applications in practice. Numerous examples arc solved throughout the book, which serve to illustrate the practical application of certain laws and principles and give the reader an opportunity to more readily grasp their true significance. The text is based, to a certain extent, upon a series of lectures given in the evening classes in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Armour Institute of Technology. The arrangement is not the one usually followed, and to some it may not appear to be logical; but it is one the author has found very satisfactory. Although the book was not originally intended to be used as a text-book, it is, however, especially adapted for use in the practical courses given in the various High and Manual Training Schools, and at the same time gives a substantial groundwork for the more advanced college and university courses. The author wishes to express his thanks to the various manufacturing companies who have been very kind in supplying material and cuts, and to Professor E. H. Freeman, head of the Department of Electrical Engineering of Armour Institute of Technology, for a number of valuable suggestions. Excerpt from Electric Power Transmission: A Practical Treatise for Practical Men This volume is designed to set forth in the simplest possible manner the fundamental facts concerning present practice in electrical power transmission. Busy men have little time to spend in discussing theories of which the practical results are known, or in following the derivation of formulæ which no one disputes. The author has therefore endeavored, in introducing such theoretical considerations as are necessary, to explain them in the most direct way practicable; using proximate methods of proof when precise and general ones would lead to mathematical complications without altering the conclusion for the purpose in hand, and stating only the results of investigation when the processes are undesirably complicated. In writing of a many-sided and rapidly changing art, it is impossible in a finite compass to cover all the phases of the subject or to prophesy the modifications that time will bring forth; hence the epoch of this work is the present and the point of view chosen is that of the man, engineer or not, who desires to know what can be accomplished by electrical power transmission, and by what processes the work is planned and carried out. This treatment is not without value to the student who wishes to couple his investigations of electrical theory with its application in the hands of engineers, and puts the facts regarding a very great and important development of applied electricity in the possession of the general reader. Such apparatus as is described is intended to be typical of the methods used, rather than representative of any particular scheme of manufacture or fashion in design.
