Come si diventa mistici? Per rispondere alla domanda questo libro paragona due casi opposti, eppure legati da molte analogie: quella del filosofo Ludwig Wittgenstein e del frate cappuccino Pio da Pietrelcina. Lontani per estrazione sociale, ambiente culturale e convinzioni religiose, i due svilupparono un’interpretazione mistica del mondo della propria esperienza negli anni della formazione reagendo in tal modo a una crisi del senso della propria esperienza quotidiana, al problema della teodicea, al periodico assentarsi di Dio. Condannata al rogo dall’Inquisizione per le tesi sostenute nel suo Specchio delle anime semplici, la vicenda di Marguerite Porete ci interroga oggi più che mai: chi era questa donna che nel XIII secolo scriveva un poema letterario, filosofico e mistico di tale levatura e complessità? Era o non era un’eretica? Il volume indaga queste domande invitando a dubitare che il testo a noi giunto non sia quello originale, ma una versione rimaneggiata dopo la morte di Marguerite, per correggerne le tesi eretiche. La ricerca si concentra su alcune pagine del poema, evidenziando la contraddittorietà dei capitoli 14-15 e 77-78, e comparando la versione de Lo Specchio in medio-francese con le traduzioni in volgare italiano. Redatte negli anni e nella lingua in cui scriveva Dante, sono state realizzate in date più prossime alla morte e alla vita di Marguerite e potrebbero rivelarsi più rispettose della versione originale, la quale non è ancora stata ritrovata.

To what extent can semiotics illuminate key problems in religious studies, given the centrality of symbols, language, and other modes of signification in religion and theology? In this volume, an interdisciplinary group of scholars uses history, sociology, anthropology, and semiotics to approach Transcendence as a human phenomenon, and shows the unavoidability of thinking with and through the Beyond. Religious experience has often been defined as an encounter with a transcendent God. Yet humans arguably have always tried to get outside or beyond themselves and society. The drive to exceed some limit or condition of finitude is an eduring aspect of culture, even in a "disenchanted" society that may have cut off most paths of access to the Beyond. The contributors to this volume demonstrate the humanity of Transcendence in various ways: as an effort to get beyond our crass physical materiality; as spiritual entrepreneurship; as the ecstasy of rituals of possession; and as a literary, aesthetic, and semiotic event. These efforts build from a shared conviction that Transcendene is thoroughly human, and accordingly avoid purely confessional and parochial approches while taking seriously the various claims and behavioral expressions of traditions in which Transcendence has been understood in theological terms.

In his quest for military glory, Benito Mussolini sent the Italian Eighth Army to the Eastern Front to help fight the Russians, only to have his forces routed within little more than a month of the launch of the Soviet counteroffensives of the winter of 1942-1943. The Cuneense, a division of mountain troops, was hit especially hard, with only a small percentage of its troops straggling back to Italy; the rest were killed in action or died of frostbite or in captivity from malnourishment, overwork, and disease. All told, the Italians suffered roughly 75,000 dead, more than in their six-month campaign in Greece and Albania or in their three years in North Africa. Nuto Revelli, who fought in Russia himself, interviewed forty-three other survivors of the campaign for a book that has become a classic among Italian war memoirs. First published in Italian in 1966 as La strada del davai, Revelli's account, now available in English, vividly recaptures the experiences and sobering reflections of these men. It provides a chilling look at an experience that, in English-language writing, has been overshadowed by that of the main actors on the Eastern Front. When news of the rout reached Italy, the shock was devastating. In Revelli's home province of Cuneo, the recruiting territory of the annihilated Cuneense Division, some villages lost almost all men of military age. The resulting rage and bitterness later fueled the partisan war against the Germans and Italian fascists. The veterans of Mussolini's Death March speak candidly of nights in the open, of extreme cold, gnawing hunger, and eruptive madness. Thousands who survived the Soviet onslaught were taken prisoner and died on the so-called davai marches-named for Russian guards' command to keep prisoners moving-or later in the camps themselves. Even so, they developed a favorable impression of the Russian people, who provided hospitality in their small houses and aid to the wounded. Together, their recollections provide an eye-opening look at a largely neglected aspect of World War II.
