There is little doubt that corporate governance has become one of the key issues for students of business and management in the 1990s. The text is the first to draw together the various strands of the debate from economics, finance, and accounting perspectives, and from an international angle that includes discussion of the issues as they relate to governance in the UK, USA, Germany, Japan and Eastern Europe. The editors identify four main approaches to Corporate Governance. These approaches can be divided into four models: The Principle-Agent or Finance Model; The Myopic-market Model (short-termism); The Abuse of Executive Power; and The Stakeholder Model. Topics covered include: the role of institutional investors the corporate board the market for corporate control management buyouts and venture capital regulation and auditing governance in the public sector This will be an essential purchase for anyone studying corporate governance whether on an undergraduate degree or MBA.

This book is a practical guide for executive and non-executive directors and aspiring directors to lead, govern, and steer UK-based organisations to long-term sustainable success. In today’s turbulent environment, corporate governance is increasingly scrutinised, and this book will consider how directors can ‘bring the future forward’ with respect to responsible and ethical governance and leadership against the challenging political, environmental, and economic backdrop. While other books discuss UK corporate governance, this one uniquely demonstrates how the work of directors can build an organisation’s antifragility, and offers a view of stewardship approaches to every sector and type of UK organisation, from large premium listed companies to start-ups, the public sector, not-for-profits, partnerships, and family-owned and private-equity-backed organisations. Aspiring and experienced directors will each benefit from this book as well as those who provide board evaluation services, professional advisers, auditors, and those who provide training and other support for board members.

This book takes a practical and people-centred approach to effective (good) corporate governance. The core message contained in the book is that good corporate governance should be based around some fundamental (globally applicable) principles, rather than being focussed on compliance with legislation and regulation. It is written by three executive with a wealth of practical business experience that has been gained in a wide variety of business sectors. The book contains some original, survey-based, research material and it takes an international perspective rather than a UK, or US centred approach. It proposes that to be truly effective corporate governance needs to be more holistic and inclusive and suggests that there are valuable lessons to be learned from developments in Malaysia and Southern Africa. The book does not attempt to provide a template, indeed the authors argue that a standard template is unnecessary providing there is a principles-based approach to good corporate governance and those fundamental principles are universally recognised.

Strategic Management in Public Services Organizations takes a comparative and international view on the appropriate use of strategic management models that are affecting the way public services organizations are managed. In an era of New and post New Public Management reforms, public managers at all levels are expected to respond to these new approaches, which profoundly affect their work practices, skills, and knowledge bases. Choosing a promising strategic management model and implementing it in a way that works for the organization or inter-organizational network in question also depends on an understanding of local politico-administrative and cultural contexts: this book helps the readers identify how to successfully tailor strategic management approaches to their specific circumstances and needs. This second edition builds upon the successes of the well-received first edition. Thoroughly updated to help public managers meet the challenges of a new decade, it has a refreshed collection of mini-cases and now includes chapter summaries. It also includes a new chapter on collaborative strategy and co-creation, in response to the growth of interest in more open forms of public policymaking. This is an advanced textbook aimed at the postgraduate level, particularly students on MPAs and MBAs with a public sector option or MScs in public policy and public management.

Managerialism In The Public Sector written by Andrea Tomo and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-24 with Business & Economics categories.

The purpose of this book is to offer insights into the complex and often unclear context of public sector management, providing a new theoretical and practical approach to the analysis and interpretation of these issues. The book is grounded in the awareness that the public sector has too often shown inefficiencies, despite the expensive measures taken, and from manifold perspectives such as the economic, social, organizational, and institutional ones, among others. It acknowledges the lack of behavioral, cultural, and context-oriented research in the field, thus proposing to innovate the debate and to expand the current understanding of which organizational features characterize modern public administrations, what factors influence the predominance of different models, with a special focus on the Italian setting, benefiting from a wholly comprehensive innovative methodological approach. The findings offer key implications for theory, practice, and policy-making, contending the importance of holistic approaches to the debate and abandoning pre-constituted schemes to put forth the relevance of behavioral models. It offers a key message: contextual-specific and cultural factors influencing individual behaviors are important and should better influence policy-making processes, towards "glocalization" in order to improve quality.

Governance Regulation And Privatization In The Asia Pacific Region written by Takatoshi Ito and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-11-01 with Business & Economics categories.

Over the last twenty-five years, there has been an acceleration in the move from government regulation towards privatization. Governance, Regulation, and Privatization in the Asia-Pacific Region is the first thoroughgoing account of the relative success of the different approaches to privatization as undertaken in Korea, China, Australia, and Japan. In most contexts, privatization is expected to yield greater efficiency and cost effectiveness while avoiding the corruption and bloated budgets of government regulation or monopoly control. But broad-scale privatization, if ill designed, has also yielded its share of difficulties in East Asia. Privatization sometimes has created a vacuum in corporate governance for some of the region's most important industries and in some cases merely reinstated the monopoly-like configurations. The papers presented in this book discuss the experiences of privatization in several industries, including railroad and telecom, corporate governance problems, accounting issues, and challenges for the future in East Asian countries. The first section is theoretical in nature and proposes boundaries among government protection, market freedom, and shareholder expectations. The second part is constituted by country case studies, beginning with an analysis of both the Korean financial crisis that followed its 1997 law to privatize large, public sector corporations and the new ways Korean corporations finance themselves. Following is an evaluation of China's approach to privatization, with an in-depth look at the financial transitions of companies slated for initial public offering. Providing provocative examples of the methods of privatization in the Asia-Pacific region specifically, these papers will be of huge import to any economist or policymaker interested in transposing those successes for their own region.
