Il testo si apre con una digressione sul concetto odierno di 'comunicazioni di massa' e sulle sue implicazioni a livello sociale, politico, economico, inserite nel più vasto panorama della globalizzazione, in cui si colloca il peculiare ed inedito fenomeno degli 'eventi mediali'. In seguito, si ripercorrono le principali teorie riguardanti le comunicazioni di massa, con riferimenti soprattutto a Marshall McLuhan e la Scuola di Toronto, Denis McQuail ed E. Shaw, teorie che hanno eletto i mezzi di comunicazione a vero oggetto di studio nell'ambito di una ricerca sem-pre più interdisciplinare. Si propone a questo punto un viaggio nelle principali tappe dell'evoluzione della storia della comunicazione, con un approccio psico-sociologico, a partire dall'oralità, attraverso la scrittura, la stampa, i mezzi elettrici (radio e televisione) fino all'era digitale e dei new media: i capitoli seguenti pren-dono approfonditamente in esame tali tappe dalla stampa in poi, soffermandosi in particolare sugli aspetti storici, ma anche sociologici, economici e giuridici e offrendo un'interpretazione di quello che sarà il futuro della comunicazione.
