Lo que ocurrió realmente el 23 de febrero de 1981 está claro hoy: no fue un intento de golpe de estado, sino una operación especial para reparar el sistema político. Una operación con la que estaba de acuerdo la mayor parte de la clase dirigente, y, por supuesto, la institución monárquica. En principio su objetivo era el de solucionar los problemas surgidos con el desarrollo del proceso autonómico, reformar la Constitución en aspectos que parecían necesarios, modificar la ley y proceso electoral, y acabar con la violencia terrorista. Nada de esto se hizo, y a fecha de hoy sigue sin haberse hecho -a excepción de la amenaza terrorista-, ya que el verdadero objetivo era solo reforzar la posición y el papel de la monarquía, sacrificando cualquier otra posible finalidad. La consecuencia inmediata del 23 de febrero no fue otra que la de que la Corona emergiera de forma poderosa ante la opinión pública y toda la nación como un baluarte imprescindible, con el beneplácito de la clase política, cómplice de aquella farsa. Antonio J. Candil era militar en activo durante los meses clave de estos acontecimientos y amigo o conocido de muchos de los militares involucrados. Retirado del ejército desde hace más de una década, goza ahora de mayor distancia tanto crítica como historiográfica. Como recoge en su Prólogo el historiador Stanley G. Payne, "aporta aspectos nuevos al estudio de esta problemática. Expone los recuerdos de un militar en activo de esos años, con muchos contactos militares tanto directos como indirectos, acompañados de unos datos nuevos. Ofrece también un conocimiento detallado y sistemático de la enorme literatura sobre esta cuestión, mientras presenta un análisis crítico y riguroso que abre perspectivas diferentes. Además, dedica una atención original a ciertos aspectos, como el subsiguiente proceso militar de los implicados."

This book is the first modern overview of the history of historiography in Spain. It covers sources from Juan de Mariana's History of Spain, written at the end of the sixteenth century, up to current historical writings and their context. The main objective of the book is to shed light on the continuities and breaks in the ways that Spanish historians represented ideas of Spain. The concept of historiography used is wide enough to span not only academic works and institutions but also public uses of history, including the history taught in schools. The methodology employed by the author combines the tradition of studies of national identity with those of historiography. One of the key themes in the book is the role of the historical profession in Spain and its influence on national discourse from the nineteenth century onwards.

In Transatlantic Fascism, Federico Finchelstein traces the intellectual and cultural connections between Argentine and Italian fascisms, showing how fascism circulates transnationally. From the early 1920s well into the Second World War, Mussolini tried to export Italian fascism to Argentina, the “most Italian” country outside of Italy. (Nearly half the country’s population was of Italian descent.) Drawing on extensive archival research on both sides of the Atlantic, Finchelstein examines Italy’s efforts to promote fascism in Argentina by distributing bribes, sending emissaries, and disseminating propaganda through film, radio, and print. He investigates how Argentina’s political culture was in turn transformed as Italian fascism was appropriated, reinterpreted, and resisted by the state and the mainstream press, as well as by the Left, the Right, and the radical Right. As Finchelstein explains, nacionalismo, the right-wing ideology that developed in Argentina, was not the wholesale imitation of Italian fascism that Mussolini wished it to be. Argentine nacionalistas conflated Catholicism and fascism, making the bold claim that their movement had a central place in God’s designs for their country. Finchelstein explores the fraught efforts of nationalistas to develop a “sacred” ideological doctrine and political program, and he scrutinizes their debates about Nazism, the Spanish Civil War, imperialism, anti-Semitism, and anticommunism. Transatlantic Fascism shows how right-wing groups constructed a distinctive Argentine fascism by appropriating some elements of the Italian model and rejecting others. It reveals the specifically local ways that a global ideology such as fascism crossed national borders.
