El presente libro condensa discusiones y análisis básicos que sobre el cambio institucional y organizacional han realizado diversos autores, donde en primera instancia se presenta la estructuración del concepto "institucionalismo". Luego se muestran los tipos de institucionalismo, así como su desarrollo de la económica institucional, las relaciones convergentes y divergentes de las escuelas de institucionalismos, la escuela vieja y nueva. También se explica el institucionalismo histórico y se ofrece una visualización de los institucionalistas según la cual las instituciones no deben ser vistas solo como otra variables, sino que también son importantes desarrollando estrategias, estableciendo metas y mediando en relaciones de cooperación y conflicto. Se relata la discusión acerca de por qué y cómo cambian las instituciones, definiendo para ellos las teorías de cambio, como teorías relacionadas con la acción y como la difusión juega un papel fundamental en el entendimiento de esta problemática, también se hace referencia a los mecanismos que apoyan el cambio institucional y como estos son importantes en dar claridad a la razón por la cual los métodos de fuerza, coerción y restricción con los únicos factores mediante los cuáles las instituciones pueden afectar las organizaciones. Posteriormente, nos adentramos en el reconocimiento de los elementos correspondientes al comportamiento que presenta el institucionalismo en su interacción con el medio ambiente. Las posiciones acerca de como debe ser abordado el tema y como los diferentes elementos que componen un sector, pueden afectar las decisiones estratégicas de una organización seguida se hace una análisis de la utilidad de la teoría neoinstitucional para predecir el comportamiento institucional en lo que tiene que ver con la inercia organizacional, la tendencia al isomorfismo, la legitimidad imperativa, la influencia relativa de las fuerzas medioambientales institucionales versus las técnicas y otras creencias del nuevo institucionalismo.
