Un testimonio en primera persona 11 de marzo de 2004. «Esta mañana la rutina se quiebra, hoy no llegaremos aAtocha. No seremos nosotros quienes alcanzaremos nuestro destino, ni ninguno ganará tiempo en los trasbordos; hoy serán el tiempo y el destino quienes nos alcanzarán a nosotros. En el vagón se produce una violenta sacudida que me hace suponer y temer que hemos sufrido un choque y, aunque no acierto a imaginar contra qué, pienso que tal vez sea contra otro tren que venía en sentido opuesto. En ese momento no encuentro otra explicación. Se me ocurre de manera automática que tras la colisión existe la posibilidad de un descarrilamiento. Me sujeto firmemente, aunque con bastante dificultad, al asiento y llevo la barbilla al pecho. Sin embargo, lo que va a llegar no lo esperaba nadie». En este tren al encuentro de su pesadilla viajaba el autor de este libro desolador y numerosos miembros de familias que ya nunca fueron las mismas. Con ellos viaja también la muerte, invisible e inexorable, escondida en una mochila. La enorme tragedia de aquel aciago 11-M marcó un antes y un después en nuestro país y condenó al recuerdo a quienes pudieron sobrevivir. José A. Garrido da un conmovedor testimonio de todo lo que entonces ocurrió y de lo que supuso auxiliar a las víctimas en los primeros momentos. A lo largo de estas páginas entrelaza vivencias, recuerdos y sentimientos, como seguramente le ocurrió a cada uno de los que ese día se encontraban en los trenes. «No me gusta la denominación de héroe, algoque por supuesto no soy. Si ese día hubo héroes, son los hombres y mujeres que quedaron para siempre en las vías y andenes. A todos los demás solo nos puede caber la satisfacción de haber cumplido con nuestro deber, unos como ciudadanos responsables y otros desde la exigencia de sus puestos de trabajo».
