Excerpt from Directory of Research Institutions in Aquaculture: May, 1992 This directory is for aquaculture scientists and researchers, students, Government agency staff, and others interested in the current areas of research in aquaculture in the United States. The directory was compiled from information provided by the us. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Sea Grant College Program, and the American Fisheries Society. Approximately 200 research institutions were contacted by mail regarding their interest in being included in this directory. Responses from 139 of those research institutions are included in this directory. They were also asked to verify their address and to include subject information regarding their aquaculture-related research. The Aquaculture Information Center wishes to thank them for their assistance in providing information for this directory. Some of the institutions listed may have very limited aquaculture programs or research directly or indirectly related to aquaculture. This list is not comprehensive, and some ongoing aquaculture research programs may have been missed inadvertently. In addition, due to the changing funding for aquaculture research, some of the programs included may have changed their research directions since the printing of this publication. Programs are listed alphabetically by State or territory with mailing addresses and when available phone or fax numbers. The umbrella institution is in boldface for each entry. The future of the Common Fisheries Policy depends on progress in the relevant areas of research. Every day the Director-General of DG XIV requires more and more information to prepare decisions which will affect the future of all those in the Community who are dependent on fishing and aquaculture. There is thus a high level of direct demand from DG XIV. Over and above this immediate and specific requirement for short- and medium-term applications, research affects the competitivity of the Community. This is one area which favours the collaboration across frontiers of all those who seek to advance knowledge. But although DG XIV is uniquely placed to appreciate the importance of research into fisheries and aquaculture, there is no question of succumbing to the temptation to directly control the scope of research or its conduct. The notion of subsidiarity can best be understood by examining the existing structures in the Member States. The Commission must act first and foremost as a catalyst, by promoting the circulation of information and the coordination of research programmes.
