Effectiveness of alternate text processing techniques for Arabic retrieval are investigated in this study. The techniques that were studied are term weighting schemes, stemming, and stop words elimination. This research explored the effect of different weighting schemes on the retrieval effectiveness in Arabic Information Retrieval. The weighting schemes that were examined are the inverse document frequency weight, probabilistic weighting, and statistical language modeling. With these weighting schemes three stemming algorithms for Arabic text were used and three stoplists were created in order to combine the statistical approaches with linguistic approaches to reach an optimal performance. The data set that was used in the experiment is the LDC (Linguistic Data Consortium) Arabic Newswire data set.

This project designed to help performing sentences based search instead of matching keywords, results will be more accurate and similar to human comprehensive search result based. The project data based on Mysql database, written I Java programming language, based on number of IR libraries. The system spitted in two project (distributed System) as follow. The indexer project: which parsing the Mysql database to be processed by the Analyzer (tokenizing, filtering Steaming) then to store into an index file. The Searcher project which apply the input keyword to the same Analyzer applied for the indexer, then to be matched with the indexed file, then to return the matched data into Web-Pages.The IR system can return accurate search result that could ordered by percentage of relevant, thanks to using the Steamer module, by apply systematic roles on each word, to return it to its infinitive (grammatically), a new Steamer module was developed to support Arabic language, which is still a developing topic in the area of IR Systems the project implements a full object oriented design using some advanced design theories such MVC (Model View Control and DAO (Data Access Object), multi tier desi

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th Asia Information Retrieval Societies Conference AIRS 2011, held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in December 2011. The 31 revised full papers and 25 revised poster papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 132 submissions. All current aspects of information retrieval - in theory and practice - are addressed; the papers are organized in topical sections on information retrieval models and theories; information retrieval applications and multimedia information retrieval; user study, information retrieval evaluation and interactive information retrieval; Web information retrieval, scalability and adversarial information retrieval; machine learning for information retrieval; natural language processing for information retrieval; arabic script text processing and retrieval.

The University of Massachusetts took on the TREC-10 cross-language track with no prior experience with Arabic, and no Arabic speakers among any of our researchers or students. We intended to implement some standard approaches, and to extend a language modeling approach to handle co-occurrences. Given the lack of resources -- training data, electronic bilingual dictionaries, and stemmers -- and our unfamiliarity with Arabic, we had our hands full carrying out some standard approaches to monolingual and cross-language Arabic retrieval, and did not submit any runs based on novel approaches. We submitted three monolingual runs and one cross-language run. We first describe the models, techniques, and resources we used, then we describe each run in detail. Our official runs performed moderately well, in the second tier (3rd or 4th place). Since submitting these results, we have improved normalization and stemming, improved dictionary construction, expanded Arabic queries, improved estimation and smoothing in language models, and added combination of evidence, increasing performance by a substantial amount.

The rapid development in the semantic search technology gives motivation to build an efficient and scalable document annotation and retrieval techniques. Most existing methods and techniques in the field of document annotation and retrieval depend on English documents. Although the growing amount of Arabic content is being spread over the internet and other resources, there is little work carried out on Arabic semantic search and Arabic document annotation and retrieval. In this research we propose an approach for enhancing the process of information retrieval for Arabic language that depends on the ontology in the process of document annotation. The results of the approach show significant improvement in the process of documents retrieval depending on the two common evaluation criteria precision and recall.

Cross Language Information Retrieval (CLIR), are aims to retrieve information in one language using queries in another language. CLIR requires that either the query or documents be translated from one language to another. In this work, the basic translation approaches of CLIR were experimented, to select the most appropriate technique in terms of ease of use, efficiency and the volume of available sources needed. Also, different methods for CLIR between Arabic and Hebrew have been investigated. An automated system is devised to accept Hebrew queries, translates the queries, and searches an Arabic document collection to retrieve the most relevant. The system uses dictionary-based approach with English as intermediate language for translating the queries from Hebrew to Arabic. The system was applied in TREC 2002 CLIR standard Arabic Collection Using 50 Hebrew queries (manually translated of Arabic TREC queries). The dictionary used is a constructed bilingual term list includes inflected words, and the translation selection method Top n was applied with synonym operator #wsyn to decrease the ambiguities.
